FreeBSD Q3 quarterly report

FreeBSD released its Q3 quarterly report yesterday  , introducing the work and related projects completed by FreeBSD in the past third quarter, involving architecture support, kernel improvement, continuous integration and driver optimization.

The enumerated part is as follows:

  • The FreeBSD Foundation is currently working on improvements to WiFi and Linux KPI layers, improving compatibility with Linuxulator applications, updating DRM/graphics drivers, adding Zstd compression for OpenZFS, dynamic RAID-Z expansion, and modernizing and improving LLDB target
  • Improvements to the build infrastructure, such as support for ARM64, migration of the development tree to Git, rewrite of UNIX domain socket locking, and improvements to the runtime dynamic linker and kernel ELF loader
  • Migrate the code warehouse management tool from Subversion to Git, and plan to launch a test version of the warehouse at the end of October
  • The upcoming FreeBSD 12.2 will optimize the Linux compatibility layer
  • The FreeBSD Ports collection contains more than 40,000 ports and packages
  • Improved support for Mesa and other graphics toolkits/libraries
  • Starting in September, support for building normal buildworld and buildkernel environments from macOS and Linux hosts. This is due to the fact that some CI tools only support Linux/macOS, they hope to use it to build the FreeBSD basic system
  • The FreeBSD 13-CURRENT DRM driver has been updated to match Linux Kernel 5.4.62
  • Optimize the URE driver to improve the USB 3.0 Gigabit Ethernet driver coverage. In addition, the drivers of ath10k, Intel and rtw88 have also been improved wirelessly.
