Early Autumn Guest House

[Tang] Du Mu

The wind blows a leaf, and everything is startled by autumn.

I cry in a foreign land alone at night, and worry about guests every year.

Where is the farewell? How long will it take to shake off?

Not as good as Fenxi old man, who is free and free.

Appreciation of works

"It's sad, autumn is the air, and the bleak vegetation shakes and decays." Song Yu, Qu Zi's student, said this long ago in his "Nine Debates". Autumn scholars are more sad, and the desolation and chill of autumn can easily arouse the sorrow and melancholy of all living beings, let alone a sentimental poet? The "Early Autumn Guest House" written by Du Mu, a poet of the late Tang Dynasty, also joined the sad autumn chorus of ancient poets.

The first six sentences of the poem are clear and easy to understand, without further explanation. "Xi old man" refers to Lu Shang before the Spring and Autumn Period. He was fishing in Fenxi Village on the bank of the Wei River. He met King Wen of Zhou and worshiped him as his teacher. He helped Zhou destroy Zhou and rule the world. The poem generally refers to the old man fishing freely by the stream. . The author has been busy in the world of mortals year after month for fame and official career. Of course, he can't help but envy and yearn for fishing for old people by the wild old stream in the fields. Although "freedom" is a term often mentioned by modern people and a state they yearn for very much, Du Mu had already marked it out a thousand years ago. Du Mu is an important figure in the poetry circle of the late Tang Dynasty. His poems are famous for being bold, handsome, and healthy, and his sad autumn is just an occasional one. His "Mountain Journey" is well-known, and his "Chang'an Autumn View" also lifts our spirits : "The building is leaning against the frost tree, and there is no mirror sky. Nanshan and autumn scenery are both magnificent!" This poem, after all, expresses the true colors of this poet.
