There is no doubt that the just-concluded GDC2023 (Game Developers Conference) still attracts the attention of developers around the world: the development trend of games, what new technologies deserve attention... It seems that the answers can be found at the GDC conference. During the 5-day event, Imagination also had the opportunity to communicate closely with partners and developers at home and abroad. In addition to theme sharing, Imagination displayed the latest achievements of its partners in the fields of automobiles, mobile phones, and cloud games in recent years in the booth area.

Topic exchange: Ray tracing will greatly promote the development of mobile games

During the conference, Hamish, a senior research engineer at Imagination, made a keynote sharing on "Math in Game Development Summit: A Visual Guide to Quaternions and Dual Quaternions" (Math in Game Development Summit: A Visual Guide to Quaternions and Dual Quaternions) . Dual quaternions are mathematical concepts used to represent transformations of rigid bodies in three-dimensional space, and are used in computer graphics to represent the position and orientation of objects in three-dimensional space.

At the same time, Imagination, Oppo, O3DE and other partners jointly held a roundtable discussion on the theme of "Open Source Progress of AAA Mobile Graphics". During the period, Tyrran Ferguson, Imagination's mobile ecology and game director, had a dialogue with mobile phone manufacturer Oppo, the Linux Foundation, and game studios Persistent and Carbonated, focusing on "how to use the cutting-edge open source rendering engine with ray tracing and other functions to promote the development of the mobile industry" Discuss topics from different perspectives.

Demonstration of Fenghua-1 and the 360-degree surround view of the car

In the booth area, Imagination brought the Fantasy One development board in cooperation with Innosilicon. It is equipped with the Imagination BXT-32-1024 MC4 GPU, which can support four applications to run independently on its own core at the same time. run. Among the four games on display, three are games created based on the Unity engine using the general rendering pipeline, two of which use the Vulkan® API, one uses OpenGL®, and the operating system is Linux Ubuntu 18.04. The fourth app showcases our 360-degree surround view demo of the car.

It is worth mentioning that the 360-degree surround view of the car showcases various technologies of Imagiantion. It is based on the Renesas R-Car H3 platform and features an Imagination PowerVR GPU, demonstrating how our GPUs can be used to create advanced surround view applications for next-generation cars. In the demo, we were able to see photorealistic car interiors and exteriors generated using physically rendered and image-based lighting techniques, with real-time perspective-corrected images from four exterior cameras projected onto the car in sync with animated 3D objects. While this is strictly an on-car feature, not a game, these were created using tools commonly used in the game development pipeline, showing how game development and photorealistic rendering are constantly merging.

Pick up Vivo and Motorola phones and compare them

In addition to some demonstrations, Imagination also brought several interactive games, and exhibitors can pick up their phones for interactive comparisons. The Vivo Y77 and Motorola G73 phones both feature the IMG BXM-8-256 GPU, where you can customize the body of a car, relax with camels in the jungle, or rock out at a concert and win races with game points . In addition, there is also a host game device Retroid Pocket 3 that was introduced before, which can be experienced on site. The player with the highest score in the game will get an Xbox Elite game controller.

Tools and demos that developers care about

For developers, what development tools Imagination provides and how to help them develop more easily are perhaps what they care most about. At the scene of GDC2023, Imagination engineers also demonstrated the practical application of PVRCarbon and PVRTune tools, and ran Unity's "Boat Attack" demo on Innosilicon's Fenghua No. 1 development version, and learned about PVRTune on IMG BXM GPU operating performance.

Imagination looks forward to interacting with more developers and understanding their needs first-hand, so as to optimize our IP as best as possible. GDC, see you next year!
