Asahi Linux adapts Apple M2 progress: keyboard is already supported, touchpad will be supported soon

Asahi Linux is a crowdfunding project initiated by veteran operating system porting expert Hector Martin (net name Marcan) with the goal of porting Linux to Mac devices powered by Apple Silicon chips. The goal of Asahi Linux  is not just to make Linux run on these devices, but ultimately to polish it to the point where it can be used as an everyday operating system, Marcan said .

We reported last week that Asahi Linux  was working on the  Apple M2 chip, and while  Marcan successfully booted Linux with it a few days after getting the new device, there's still a lot of peripheral support work to be done. So, he continued porting work on the Apple M2 MacBook.

Recently, Marcan  said that a new Linux driver is being developed to support the keyboard and touchpad of the Apple M2 MacBook. As of yesterday, he's done about 1000 lines of code (not really done) for initial keyboard support, before moving on to initial touchpad support, which is so important for laptops after all.

Marcan  hopes to make Asahi Linux equivalent to the Apple M1 and M2 soon. For now, power management, Thunderbolt support, and GPU acceleration are features that make Asahi Linux more competitive.
