kcp enters the CNCF sandbox

kcp announced to join CNCF and become a sandbox project. kcp is a Kubernetes-like control plane focused on:

  • A control plane for many independent, isolated "clusters" called workspaces
  • Enables API service providers to centrally provide APIs using multi-tenant operators
  • Make it easy for users to use the API in their workspace

For SaaS service providers who need a large-scale multi-tenant platform, kcp can serve as a building block to provide services to a large number of fully isolated tenants using the Kubernetes-native API. The goal is to help cloud providers as well as enterprise IT departments that provide APIs within their companies.

Last April, Red Hat announced that kcp would no longer be their focus project and invited the community to take over the project. Since then, kcp has established a new project governance mechanism as a community project and formed a new maintainer list to promote the development of the kcp project. Recently, team members redesigned kcp.io to honor this "new" kcp project.

From the beginning of the new project governance mechanism, we have clearly understood that kcp does not exist in isolation. It is part of the Kubernetes ecosystem, so joining the CNCF to formalize this relationship was an obvious choice. After evaluating our application, the Technical Oversight Committee (TOC) decided to accept us into the CNCF Sandbox Program.

We're obviously very excited about this decision and proud to be part of a community of great open source projects. Being part of the CNCF community is a very humbling experience and feels like coming home.

We have very big plans for 2024 and beyond. We'll be adding features critical to kcp's mission, improving the experience of running kcp on Kubernetes, spreading the word about building a scalable control plane for SaaS services, growing the community, and more.
