How to tell if you need to reset the SMC
If the following symptoms appear, it may indicate that the SMC needs to be reset:
The battery cannot be charged a>
Mac won’t turn on
Fan speed is too fast
Mac laptop is too hot
Built-in camera Not working
Apple-powered Mac
Make sure your Mac is plugged in, then take one of the following actions.
Restart: Choose Apple menu >Restart.
Or shut down: Choose Apple menu >Shut Down. Then press your Mac's power button to turn it back on.
Mac with Apple T2 chip
Laptop with T2 chip
Before resetting the SMC, follow these steps:
If possible, shut down your Mac.
Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then release the button.
Every Mac has a power button. On laptops with Touch ID, press and hold Touch ID.
Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to turn your Mac on.
If the problem persists, reset the SMC:
Turn off your Mac.
On the built-in keyboard, press and hold all of the following keys. The Mac may boot.
Control on the left side of the keyboard
Option (Alt) on the left side of the keyboard
Shift on the right side of the keyboard< a i=13> Press and hold the three buttons for 7 seconds, then press and hold the power button without releasing the buttons. If your Mac is on, it will shut down while you hold down these keys.
Continue to hold the four keys for 7 seconds, and then release the keys.
Wait a few seconds, then press the power button to turn your Mac on.
Desktop computers with T2 chips
If your Mac is not a laptop, follow these steps:
- Shut down your Mac and unplug the power cord.
- Wait 15 seconds and then replug the power cord.
- Wait 5 seconds, then press the power button to turn your Mac on.
If you don’t have a Mac with an Apple chip or a T2 chip
Follow these steps on an older computer that doesn’t have either an Apple chip or an Apple T2 security chip.
Laptop
Shut down your Mac.
On the built-in keyboard, press and hold all of the following keys:
Shift on the left side of the keyboard
Control< on the left side of the keyboard /span> Release all keys, and then press the power button to turn on your Mac. Press and hold the four keys for 10 seconds While holding these three keys, press and hold the power button.
Option (Alt) on the left side of the keyboard
