Introducing RustRover – the standalone Rust IDE from JetBrains

“When will there be a Rust IDE?”

This is a question often asked by users, and now, we have a special announcement that this day has arrived: a warm welcome to our independent Rust IDE –  RustRover .

As many of you know, we've been working on supporting Rust functionality in IntelliJ IDEA and CLion as plugins for several years. However, time and time again we receive requests from the community for an IDE specifically focused on Rust and its ecosystem, one that is functionally equivalent to the existing JetBrains IDE.

Today, we officially open the RustRover Early Access Program (EAP) . We hope you will participate in the trial and provide us with feedback to help us improve the product. We will listen to your feedback and update frequently to ensure that the product meets user needs. RustRover will be free during public preview , and the licensing model will be finalized closer to the commercial release date.

As the number of Rust plugin users grows, so does the need for new features. In RustRover, our goal is to take JetBrains' Rust support to the next level (stay tuned for future updates). Therefore, the investment required for such functions is also increasing. To be consistent with our other IDEs and to ensure our long-term sustainability as a team and a company, RustRover will be available under a commercial plan. The product is free to use during the EAP period , after which we will provide RustRover as a standalone commercial IDE or as part of  the All Products Pack  . Our goal is to release RustRover by September 2024.

Existing open source plug-ins

Existing open source plugins that we have developed over many years have become the foundation of RustRover. The plugin will remain open source and available for free on GitHub and Marketplace. However, in the future we will devote our energy to the closed source RustRover. For existing open source plug-ins, we will do our best to maintain compatibility with new versions of IDE, but we will not fix bugs or add new features. Existing open issues for RustRover on GitHub have been imported into our issue tracker .

IntelliJ IDEA and CLion support

Like many of our IDEs, RustRover functionality can be installed as plug-ins in IntelliJ IDEA Ultimate.

Plug-ins can also be installed in CLion during preview. However, we have yet to determine if this will remain the case after RustRover is released. Because we are not yet sure if users need this plugin, or if a dedicated Rust IDE is enough.

Join the Rust Foundation

We believe the Rust ecosystem and community will continue to grow. Otherwise we would not launch an IDE. To this end, we are pleased to announce that JetBrains has joined the Rust Foundation. We will work with many existing members to support the work of the Rust community and drive further development.
