Windows CE is completely retired

Windows CE (Windows Embedded Compact), the Windows embedded operating system born in 1996, has reached the end of its life cycle this month.

Windows CE was originally a streamlined version of Windows, and then gradually developed into a completely new operating system. It has its own CE kernel instead of the NT kernel used by traditional Windows operating systems.

Its last version was Windows Embedded Compact 2013 (or Windows CE 8.0) released on August 11, 2013. This version ended mainstream support (Mainstream Support) in October 2018 and ended extended support (Extended) in October 2023 . Support) , becoming an unsupported retired product.

However, few people noticed that Windows CE's life cycle has ended. As a product, the launch of CE 8.0 failed to garner much attention or publicity. Even within the Windows CE community, most people feel that Windows Embedded Compact 2013 is completely unsuitable for use. As with Windows CE 7.0 before it, very few devices have been released based on the CE 8.0 platform, so most people have never even seen a physical CE 8 device.

The only noteworthy feature of CE 8 is the addition of IPv6 support for the first time, but more importantly the removal of the default sample user interface, which stipulates that any OEM must release a device with a fully custom coded interface, however few vendors are willing In doing so, the move effectively ends the era of cheap Windows CE netbook devices.

In fact, Microsoft has not introduced the origin of the CE abbreviation. Common explanations include Compact Edition, Customer Embedded, Consumer Electronics, etc.

At the Embedded Systems Conference held on April 15, 2008, Microsoft announced that Windows CE would be renamed Windows Embedded Compact, which together with Windows Embedded Enterprise, Windows Embedded Standard and Windows Embedded POSReady would form the Windows Embedded series of products.
