Recently, the 2023 Financial Industry Database Technology Conference hosted by the Beijing Institute of Financial Informatization was successfully held in Beijing. The conference invited leaders of financial industry authorities, business representatives, and experts in the database field to conduct in-depth exchanges on the development and application of database technology in the financial industry. Su Guangniu, General Manager of Huawei Cloud Database Service Product Department, and Zhuang Qianfeng, CTO of Huawei Cloud Database Service Product Department, were invited to attend and shared their design thinking and key technical capabilities about Huawei Cloud GaussDB database.

During the results release session, Huawei, together with Beijing Institute of Financial Informatization, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Postal Savings Bank, Hua Xia Bank, Guangdong Rural Credit Union, etc., released the "Financial Core System Database Innovation Practice" focusing on the selection and application of core system databases in the financial industry. Su Guangniu: Stability, operation and maintenance, and long-term support capabilities are the keys to a database

The transactional database is the core of all systems. The stability of the database determines the SLA of most online trading systems. The operability of the database determines the security and efficiency of the data. Compared with performance and migration costs, database stability and operability are often hidden under the iceberg. At the meeting, Mr. Su Guangniu shared "GaussDB, some thoughts on the design" focusing on the performance, stability, operability, cost and HTAP of the database.

Huawei has unswervingly invested in GaussDB strategically, focusing on the full-scenario demands of Huawei and its customers, trustworthiness and security, and continuous innovation. It is currently the only database product in China that has withstood the rigorous test of business continuity. Since the release of the GaussDB distributed architecture in 2019 , gradually completed the database replacement of Huawei's internal terminal cloud, MetaERP and operator equipment. It has also been launched on a large scale in many external state-owned banks, joint-stock banks, insurance and securities companies, helping customers in the national critical infrastructure industry to achieve the overall scale transformation and upgrade of the database. .

Stability and availability : The GaussDB dual-cluster solution in the same city achieves higher business high availability. Physical replication between storage clusters enables lower data synchronization latency and higher efficiency without affecting host-side performance; consistency and reliability meet financial-level requirements, RPO=0, cross-region switching RTO < 120 seconds, and 100% complete isolation of software and hardware faults is achieved, and single point failures will not extend to other clusters.

Operability: Based on Huawei’s public cloud operation and maintenance experience of hundreds of thousands of database instances, GaussDB realizes SQL’s full-scale and full-link perception, analysis, and optimization capabilities, as well as monitoring and intelligent diagnosis capabilities covering the entire process to improve Customers’ application development experience and intelligent operation and maintenance experience improve operation and maintenance efficiency in all aspects.

Flexible deployment: GaussDB supports single-shard and multi-shard deployment modes based on distributed architecture. Single-shard distributed is compatible with centralized architecture, which is more friendly to application migration, and single shard supports 16TB. Multi-shard distribution supports a maximum of 256 shards and 1024 nodes, and can store up to 4PB. Flexible deployment is achieved through single-sharding and multi-sharding modes to meet the different needs of enterprises for cost, smooth migration, and business growth.

Cost: To quickly complete database transformation under the premise of stable business operation, it is necessary to prioritize performance, migration success and business continuity, and gradually improve the cost performance. The design thinking of GaussDB is to expand the individual capabilities and avoid unnecessary modifications by customers. Taking single-shard capability as an example, GaussDB supports 16T of single-shard storage, and its performance improves linearly when accessed by multiple threads. The Ustore storage engine innovatively developed by GaussDB can maintain high performance without jitter even when large amounts of data are frequently updated for a long time; by applying transparent compression technology, the impact on the business can be controlled within 5%, achieving low performance loss.

Regarding MySQL, Su Guangniu shared Huawei Public Cloud's resource investment and version strategy in MySQL operation and maintenance, the investment guarantee for enterprises using MySQL, and the MySQL optimization practices accumulated by Huawei Cloud in the long-term operation and maintenance process to provide customers with reference. The new MySQL compatibility framework that GaussDB database will release will avoid intrusive modifications through plug-ins. The compatibility will not affect GaussDB's own syntax system and remain the industry leader.

Regarding HTAP, the best route at this stage is that TP and AP each perform their own duties. OLTP completes the replacement and upgrade of traditional databases. OLAP performs analysis of ultra-large dimensions and large-scale data volumes. Quasi-real-time synchronization between OLTP and OLAP is achieved through logs. Achieve data synchronization.
