Photoshop AI’s stunning generative fills

Adobe recently launched a beta version of Photoshop that adds a new AI feature called " generative fill."

What does it do? Generate fills can automatically add, expand, or remove content from an image in a non-destructive manner using simple text prompts.

It works very well.

Here are some examples of what generated padding can do.

Expand

Expansion has the opposite effect of clipping. This is a technique that extends the boundaries of an image beyond its original size or aspect ratio.

Photoshop can automatically account for the extra space by clicking the Generate button...without prompting.

Impressive right?

Here is another example of exterior painting.

I used AI Image Tips halfway through to create the first image in a Baroque painting style, and for the second image I used Photoshop's Generative Fill to expand the image.

Combine images with generative fill

An exciting aspect of generating fills is that they can blend multiple images together seamlessly.

Here are two images of robotic street musicians that I generated using Midjourney.

To merge the two images, I placed them side by side on the Photoshop canvas, making sure they were roughly the same size.

You can see that the backgrounds of the two images are very different.

I selected the middle section and simply asked Photoshop to merge them. It turned out really well.

But this band could use a drummer, so I selected a rectangular area between the two robots and prompted Photoshop to create a steampunk robot drummer.

that's right. You can prompt Photoshop to generate new image content, and it will try to match the context of the entire image.

repair

Repair can replace an area of an image or add new content that blends seamlessly with surrounding areas.

This is a portrait of a woman I created on Midjourney.

But before I fix it, I just want to add something to the portrait. So I drew more on the photo using generative fill.

I then selected her face and prompted Photoshop to add the Catwoman mask

Boom...well done.

I really don't know how long it would take to manually edit digitally in a mask.

theme change

Another great AI feature is the ability to instantly select the subject of an image. There is now a Select Theme button in Photoshop.

Once you select a theme, you can remove the background or even better... invert the selection and prompt a new background scene.

Here I added a hint of the beach background scene.

Astonishing.

The joy of generating artificial intelligence

Ever wonder why the man in that famous Norwegian painting is screaming?

Let Photoshop tell you :)

Let’s be honest, generative fill is bringing joy to image editing.
