Interpretation of new features of Grafana 10: Comprehensive improvement in experience and collaboration

To celebrate Grafana's 10-year milestone, Grafana Labs launched Grafana 10, a monumental release that emphasizes enhancing the user experience and making it easier for developers of all kinds to use it. Grafana v10.0.x showcases remarkable new features, visualization and collaboration capabilities for developers and enterprises, including:

Update Panel panel
Update Dashboard
Update navigation bar
Update Grafana Altering

This article only introduces some of the features of Grafana v10.0.x update. For more details, please refer to Grafana official documentation [1] .

So, today we will take you to explain one by one the various new features and capabilities brought by Grafana 10.

01 New Panel

(1)XY Chart panel

Grafana v10.0.x supports the new xy chart panel, including line charts and scatter charts.

(2) XY Trend panel

Grafana v10.0.x adds a new xy trend chart. The trend chart allows you to display the trend where the x-axis is a numerical value (x needs to increase) instead of time. This panel solves a problem that neither Time Series nor XY Chart panels can solve. For example, you can draw function graphs, rpm/torque curves, supply and demand relationships, etc.

(3)DataGrid panel

Grafana v10.0.x adds a new DataGrid panel, which supports editing data in the Grafana dashboard to customize the data. You can use it to fine-tune the data read from the data source or create new data.

The modified data is saved in the form of a snapshot and is not updated over time.

After saving the DataGrid, select the dashboard data source in the new panel. You can use the fine-tuned data as the data source and support transforming the DataGrid data.

(4) Canvas panel

Canvas is a new panel that combines the power of Grafana with the flexibility of custom elements. Canvas visualizations are extensible form-built panels that allow users to design custom visualizations and overlay data in ways not possible with standard Grafana panels by explicitly placing elements in static and dynamic layouts. For example, you can place an image layer, then overlay text updated by a Grafana data source, and display icons that conditionally change color based on the data.

(5) Logs Panel optimization

Grafana v10.0.x has further optimized the display of Logs type and added the following functions or components:

Logging details via actions, including a Copy button for easily copying rows, and an eye icon to display only selected tags, allowing users to focus on specific information without leaving the log context section.
The wrap toggle automatically wraps long text, making it easier to read and analyze log entries directly within the context of the log.
The Open in Split View button performs contextual queries on log entries in the split screen of Explore.

02 New dashboard

(1) Multi-level folders

Grafana v10.0.x supports multi-level folders to facilitate hierarchical management of a large number of dashboards.

Note: When a subfolder is moved, it will inherit the permissions of the new parent folder.

(2) Support query of mixed data sources

Selecting Mixed data source in Explore of Grafana v10.0.x can define a data source for each query and display it in the same graph.

(3) Data source selection

When selecting a data source in Grafana v10.0.x, click open advanced datasource picker to expand the data source selection page and display the optional data sources more clearly.
When editing or creating a panel in Grafana v10.0.x, you can drag or select to upload specific types of data sources on the data source selection page, such as .csv, .txt, .xlsx, .json, etc.

(4) Annotation->Time area marking and filtering

Grafana10 supports marking of the time area of the time series panel. Time zones provide a more contextual experience, with the ability to highlight certain days of the week, such as Monday through Friday, to display the work week alongside the data. Time areas are also a useful way to highlight specific parts of the day, such as nighttime, work hours, or whatever you want to define for each day. They allow users to quickly target certain parts of the day or ignore highlighted parts of the time series.

Setting method: Create the annotations that need to be applied in the annotations in the settings of the dashboard and apply them.

The effect of the above annotation is from 15:00-19:00 every day. Special annotation:

Dashboard comments can be filtered to apply the comments to all panels or selected panels, or use them to exclude selected panels.

03 Update navigation bar

(1)Search bar

Grafana v10.0.x adds a search bar at the top of all pages, allowing you to directly search and access all pages and recently used dashboards.

(2) Data source connections (connections)

The connections in the left navigation of Grafana v10.0.x provide new data source creation and editing paths, grouping data source related tools together for easy access.

Add new connection displays all data source plug-ins. After installation, you can create data sources directly through the plug-in page.

Data sources are consistent with Grafana 9 management data sources.

Note: install requires admin login.

Grafana 10 still supports the old data source installation path, but there will be a reminder.

(3) Page jump

Display the path of the current page through the breadcrumb component and quickly return to any page on the previous path.

(4) Chinese support

Grafana v10.0.x adds a new language setting in administration->default preference, supporting Chinese.

04 Update Grafana Altering alarm

(1) Preview notification template

After defining the alarm notification template in Grafana 10, you can preview the content of the alarm.

(2) Copy and create new alarm rules

New alarm rules can be created through copying, which makes it easier to create when multiple similar rules are needed.

Supports exporting all alarm rules through export.
