The difference between installation package file type MSI and software package

Both MSI and software packages are installation files, but their main difference lies in usage scenarios and functions:

  1. MSI (Microsoft Installer): This is Microsoft's installer package format, commonly used in enterprise environments because it works with Active Directory and other enterprise-level software deployment tools. MSI files provide more customization options, such as silent installation through command line parameters (no user interaction required), choosing the installation path, etc. In addition, administrators can remotely deploy MSI installation packages to multiple computers in the network through Group Policy.

  2. Software package (Standalone Installer): This is an independent installation program designed for individual users to directly double-click to run and complete the installation process. In comparison, its functions are simpler and mainly suitable for manual installation by ordinary users.

Depending on your needs, if you need to install on multiple computers, or if you need a more complex installation configuration, MSI may be a better choice. If you just want a simple installation on a single computer, the package should be enough.

Install (GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise64.msi)

After downloading, I found three installation packages:

The three files are all Google-related installation packages, but they have different functions:

  1. GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise64.msi: This is the offline installation package of Google Chrome browser, used to install Chrome browser without network connection.

  2. EndpointVerification_2.0.3.msi: This is Google’s endpoint verification tool, primarily used in enterprise environments. This tool helps IT administrators gather information about the devices used within their organization so they can better understand and manage them.

  3. LegacyBrowserSupport_7.4.0.0_en_x64.msi: This is Google's Legacy Browser Support (LBS) plug-in. This plug-in allows IT administrators to set certain websites to open in older browsers, while other websites open in Chrome by default. This is useful for some enterprise applications that only run in older browsers.

If you just want to install the Chrome browser, just run it GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise64.msi. The other two msi files are primarily designed for enterprise environments.

We double-click GoogleChromeStandaloneEnterprise64.msi, it will automatically install and create a desktop shortcut, and it will be installed in a short time.
