The edge computing community has recently learned that European cloud giant OVHcloud has entered negotiations to fully acquire German company gridscale, a software provider specializing in hyper-converged infrastructure.
This strategic acquisition will mark another important milestone for OVHcloud, allowing the group to significantly accelerate its geographical deployment and enter the emerging, fast-growing edge computing market.
gridscale offers a range of innovative multi-tenant IaaS and PaaS products and services. The company's main operations are located in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Netherlands, where it enjoys a good reputation. It can quickly deploy a public cloud environment on a limited infrastructure, giving it a significant competitive advantage, combined with the depth of the OVHcloud solution portfolio, will enable the group to develop in the public cloud market in a more agile and flexible manner, while having Gain better control over your investments.
The gridscale acquisition addresses three key challenges for OVHcloud:
Implementing an ambitious growth strategy in the edge computing market: This close-to-user infrastructure model is ideal for use cases that require low latency and compliance with regulatory requirements in industries such as healthcare, financial services, and government.
Extend native cloud services by deploying OVHcloud products on customer's infrastructure. As a result, customers who want to retain ownership of their infrastructure for the most demanding use cases in terms of data residency or on-premises data processing will be able to benefit from cloud-native capabilities and the depth of OVHcloud's portfolio of 80 IaaS and PaaS solutions.
The Group accelerates its international deployment while maintaining a controllable investment trajectory. As a result, OVHcloud plans to open many new public cloud regions in colocation data centers through 2026, with limited investment and in line with revenue growth. OVHcloud's primary goal is to open new regions in major cities around the world. Also, in some regions, a multi-AZ (Availability Zone) model can be quickly implemented with limited investment.
gridscale's management team, founders and all their employees will soon join OVHcloud, a pool of skills and products that will make it possible to quickly offer customers edge computing capabilities fully integrated into OVHcloud products. This new product will be available thanks to the existing API and will guarantee a homogeneous user experience for customers.
The transaction is expected to close in early fiscal 2024 and has no impact on fiscal 2023.
