AMBEO two-channel spatial audio now enters the field of live broadcast production

Unlocking a more immersive listening experience for all audiences

Sennheiser has introduced the powerful AMBEO two-channel spatial audio technology into the field of live broadcast and television applications. This is very exciting news for all sports event broadcasters. This technology has transformed the streaming experience for viewers using stereo equipment, and now it’s about to make its live broadcast debut. At the NAB show, Sennheiser Pro Labs released a prototype of the AMBEO binaural spatial audio real-time renderer, ready for field testing.

In this day and age of immersive formats, both for content production and consumption, many viewers still only have a stereo system in their homes. The leading streaming media service providers in the market are already solving this problem, presenting members with a theater-quality listening experience with the help of AMBEO two-channel spatial audio rendering. This technology transforms immersive mixes into an enhanced binaural experience that can be presented with any stereo equipment, allowing any audience to enjoy surround sound and immersive content. Since its launch last year, AMBEO binaural spatial audio has made more and more people feel the beauty of immersive sound. However, this breakthrough immersive processing technology was previously unavailable for live events - and today that regret will no longer be the case.

Expanding from the streaming media industry to the broadcast and television industry

Renato Pellegrini, head of the Sennheiser Professional Laboratory, said: "Today, major sporting events shown on television are increasingly produced in immersive formats. stereo sound system, an experience that is difficult to bring into every home. The result is duplication of effort between stereo mix and immersive mix production. Today, our renderer helps broadcasters reliably support making It is able to focus on immersive formats and then transform the mix into a stereo experience of far higher quality than ever before.”

Pellegrini added: “Working live has its own unique challenges, with the production process requiring a high degree of precision and coordination. The mix must be ready within a few video frames, the tools must be adapted to the specific workflow, and the equipment must remain reliable at all times. When we set out to build a real-time renderer, the need for this environment was at the forefront."

Now ready for field application

In the first operation of the AMBEO binaural spatial audio real-time renderer, Merging Technologies’ powerful AES67 device was used, which is also widely used in broadcast and television environments. At the NAB show, Sennheiser demonstrated a prototype plug-in for the Anubis interface, which can further expand the device's already powerful Monitor Mission monitoring function by adding AMBEO two-channel spatial audio processing.

This real-time renderer converts standard multi-channel surround sound and immersive formats into two audio channels in real time for delivery to any stereo-capable device today. Controls, patented for use in broadcast environments, enable fine-tuning of spatial effects settings to maintain the integrity of the mix and the clarity of dialogue sounds.
