vSphere 8 achieves general availability
In the vSphere 8 Release Model, the IA and GA names are used to indicate customer adoption and use of the product. The new IA is our fully tested production quality release that meets all release criteria - previously this would have had the GA designation. The release is now designated as GA based on the customer's deployment experience, an additional quality assurance that never existed before. It gives customers who are slow to adopt the confidence that the product has seed time and proven customer deployments.
The quality of the vSphere 8 IA release has exceeded expectations and is highly recommended for mass adoption. Don't wait for "Update 1" to be released, as some have done; you can be confident that the product has been deployed at scale in a wide range of real-world customer environments.

Frequently Asked Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Is vSphere+ a new version of vSphere ?
vSphere+ is a new subscription-based offering with on-premises and cloud components that interact with each other. On-premises components include cloud gateways, vCenter instances, and ESXi hosts. The cloud component includes various cloud services for administrators (or IT operations) and developers (or DevOps) that enhance on-premises capabilities, all accessible within the VMware Cloud console (sysin). A cloud gateway connects your vCenter instance to the VMware Cloud console, where you can centrally manage your on-premises infrastructure and access cloud services.
-
Can I upgrade or convert my existing vSphere environment and licenses to vSphere+ ?
Yes, vSphere+ is designed to provide an easy, non-disruptive upgrade for customers already using vSphere. Existing vSphere Enterprise Plus licenses can be easily converted to subscription-based entitlements. Please contact your VMware partner or sales representative to begin upgrading to vSphere+.
-
Is vSphere+ a SaaS offering ?
vSphere+ includes cloud services offered as SaaS. Your vCenter instance and ESXi hosts remain in the on-premises environment.
-
What is the process for subscribing to vSphere+ ?
Please contact your VMware partner or sales representative to learn how to subscribe to vSphere+.
-
Is there a trial version of vSphere+ ?
Contact your VMware partner or sales representative for a free trial of vSphere+ in your environment.
-
How to get started with vSphere+ ? What do I need to download and install ?
You can easily get started with vSphere+. VMware's getting started email provides setup instructions and the process takes about an hour.
-
Can legacy vSphere be managed by vSphere+ ?
Yes, vSphere+ supports ESXi 6.7 or later. The vCenter instance needs to be updated to the latest version.
-
Are there any special hardware requirements to run vSphere+ ?
There are no special hardware requirements for vSphere+ beyond the basic vSphere+ requirements.
-
What are the key enhancements of vSphere+ over vSphere ?
With vSphere, you can:
- Access cloud services offered as a service (SaaS)
- Centralized management using cloud console (sysin)
- Create enterprise-grade Kubernetes environments at no additional cost
- buy by subscription
Check out the list of detailed features available in vSphere+.
-
What types of workloads does vSphere+ support ?
vSphere+ supports traditional virtual machine-based workloads as well as modern container-based workloads. There is no difference in the types of workloads supported between vSphere+ and vSphere.
-
What additional services can be purchased and used with vSphere+ ?
VMware is developing vSphere+ add-on services to speed disaster recovery, ransomware protection, capacity planning and more. For a list of add-on services currently available for purchase or in development, please contact your VMware partner or sales representative.
-
What developer services are included with vSphere+ ?
vSphere+ includes a wide range of developer services, including Virtual Machine Services, Storage Services, Network Services, Registry Services, Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Service, Tanzu Integration Services, Tanzu Mission-Control Essentials, and more. -
Where can I find a list of the key features of vSphere+ ?
-
How secure is the vSphere+ Cloud Gateway ? Does it make my IT environment vulnerable to cyber attacks ?
vSphere+ delivers cloud benefits by linking on-premises vCenter instances to VMware Cloud's secure cloud gateway. The vSphere+ Cloud Gateway uses industry standard Transport Layer Security (TLS) to secure network connections and does not copy or share your proprietary data to the cloud (sysin). The gateway allows VMware to initiate maintenance and support operations, which are secured by applying traditional security concepts such as separation of privileges and least privilege.
-
When upgrading an existing vSphere environment, does vSphere+ require me to move workloads, vCenter instances, or any other vSphere infrastructure to the cloud ?
None of your workloads or on-premises vSphere infrastructure will move to the cloud. Your workloads will continue to run locally on the ESXi host. With vSphere+, you can centrally manage your on-premises environment from a cloud console and enhance management through cloud services.
If you choose to migrate your on-premises workloads to the cloud, vSphere+ makes the process easier. You can migrate workloads to VMware Cloud on AWS using the Hybrid Linked Mode feature built into the vSphere+ Cloud Gateway.
-
What happens if the connection to the cloud is lost? Will vSphere+ stop working ?
If you lose your connection to the cloud, only access to the cloud service and the cloud console will be affected. vCenter instances, ESXi hosts, and workloads will continue to function normally and be manageable from vCenter (via the vSphere Client).
-
What new tools do I need to learn ?
The only additional tool required to reap the benefits of vSphere+ is the VMware Cloud console accessible through a web browser.
-
How do I access the VMware Cloud console ?
The VMware Cloud console can be accessed at https://vmc.vmware.com . After logging in, users can view and subscribe to available VMware services, including vSphere+.
