What is vSphere Replication?

It simplifies disaster recovery protection with storage-agnostic, VM-centric replication. It also supports a variety of underlying storage solutions with multiple point-in-time recovery and customizable recovery point objectives from 5 minutes to 24 hours.

vSphere Replication is configured on a per-virtual machine basis, allowing fine-grained control over which virtual machines are replicated. This replication occurs from a primary site to a secondary site, between two clusters within a single site, and from multiple source sites to a single target site, regardless of the underlying storage array. vSphere Replication is a feature of the vSphere platform that is natively integrated with Site Recovery Manager.

How does Site Recovery Manager work?

For maximum flexibility and freedom of choice, Site Recovery Manager integrates with vSphere through VMware Server and underlying replication technology. It integrates natively with vSphere Replication, vSphere Virtual Volumes (vVols) integrated storage arrays, and with a variety of storage array-based replication solutions from leading storage vendors through storage replication adapters.

What components are required for a Site Recovery Manager deployment?

Both the protected and recovery sites require instances of vSphere, vCenter Server, and Site Recovery Manager. SRM also requires an underlying replication product to replicate virtual machines to the recovery site. Customers can choose to use vSphere Replication, Virtual Volumes (vVols) integrated storage arrays, or third-party array-based replication software. When using array-based replication software, a Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) is required.

Which replication software is supported?

Site Recovery Manager requires vSphere Replication, vSphere Virtual Volumes (vVols) integrated storage arrays, array-based replication, or storage-based replication for iSCSI, FibreChannel, or NFS storage arrays. For storage-based replication, VMware works with storage partners to ensure customers can deploy SRM using the storage and storage replication platform of their choice. SRM works with a variety of replication software through Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) plug-ins, which are developed and certified by storage vendors for use with SRM. What is the difference between Site Recovery Manager and VMware Site Recovery?

VMware Site Recovery for VMware Cloud on AWS is a separate service but builds on Site Recovery Manager and vSphere Replication. Site Recovery provides on-demand disaster recovery as a service to protect workloads on-premises and on VMware Cloud on AWS. The service automatically recovers workloads in the event of disaster recovery between on-premises data centers and VMware Cloud on AWS, and between different instances of VMware Cloud on AWS. It replicates workloads to VMware Cloud on AWS so they can be launched whenever you need them.
