Huawei Kunpeng Server

1 Introduction

The Kunpeng general computing platform provides TaiShan servers based on Kunpeng processors, Kunpeng motherboards and development kits. Hardware manufacturers can develop their own brand products and solutions based on the Kunpeng motherboard; software manufacturers can develop application software and services based on the openEuler open source OS and supporting database, middleware and other platform software; Kunpeng development kits can help developers accelerate application migration and computing force upgrade. The Kunpeng general-purpose computing platform adapts to the needs of diverse computing and green computing in various industries, and is committed to building the strongest computing power platform.

The Kunpeng 920 processor (ARM v8.2) is a high-performance processor for data centers released by Huawei in January 2019. It is independently developed and designed by Huawei to meet the needs of diverse and green computing in data centers. The Kunpeng 920 processor is compatible with the ARM architecture and is manufactured using a 7nm process. It can support 32/48/64 cores, the main frequency can reach 2.6GHz, and it supports 8-channel DDR4 , PCIe 4.0 and 100G RoCE networks.

2. Development history

On October 20, 2019, Hou Jinlong, senior vice president of Huawei , released the Kunpeng 920 (Kunpeng920) processor at the World Internet Conference .

On March 27, 2020, Huawei held the 2020 Developer Conference online, announcing the latest developments in the Kunpeng + Ascend ecosystem. Hou Jinlong, president of Huawei Cloud and Computing BG, said that he hopes to make 90% of the applications run on Kunpeng within three years.

Hou Jinlong said that in the 5G era, all applications are going to the cloud. Devices such as mobile phones and tablets are based on the ARM architecture . Kunpeng is also based on the ARM architecture. The performance of the cloud and the device can be improved by 40%. Compared with natural advantages.

In 2022, the Kunpeng 920 processor will be collected by the National Museum.

3. Computing performance

How big is the performance gap between Kunpeng 920 and Intel chips?

It can be seen from the figure that the performance of the 48-core Kunpeng 920 is similar to that of the Intel Xeon 8180, but the power consumption is 20% lower; the 64-core Kunpeng 920 is about 33% higher than the Intel Xeon 8180. Xeon 8180 is Intel's flagship chip for servers, with 28 cores and 2.5GHz frequency, widely used in X86 servers.

Someone used Kunpeng 920 and Intel Xeon E5-2630 V3 to test and compare with SuperMap GIS basic software products. The test results showed that: Intel’s Xeon chip has a slight advantage in single-threading, but it consumes significantly more time than Kunpeng in multi-threading. many.

It can be seen that the performance of the Kunpeng 920 processor is completely comparable to that of Intel, and even in terms of multi-threading capability, it is stronger than Intel's flagship chip and consumes less power, which is also the advantage of ARM.

Of course, the ecology of ARM chips is not as good as that of X86 chips. And because the instruction sets are different, there will be different emphases when calculating.
