The left side of the main window of the IDM (Internet Download Manager) downloader is the classification of download categories, which provides classification functions to organize and manage files. If you don't need it, you can delete the "Categories" window and download files without selecting any categories.
Each download category has a name, a default download directory, and a list of associated file types. Several default categories are music, video, program, video, document, etc., which can be edited, deleted or added by yourself.

Right-clicking on a category will display a menu (shown in Figure 1) that allows adding categories, editing, and deleting existing items. To add a category, you can add the category name and the file extension associated with the category, as well as the default download directory for the category file.

For example: Adding the "Documents" category can associate files with the extension name "doc docx pdf xls txt" and the default storage address is "C:\Users\Downloads\".
After setting, IDM will automatically recognize categories and folders when downloaded or saved files match the list of file types. However, if you disable the "Save File" dialog in IDM Options, IDM will not automatically recognize downloads in categories and folders.
Main window appearance customization
The main window of IDM can also customize the appearance of the download file column and toolbar. There are 4 built-in toolbar appearances: large buttons, small buttons, classic buttons and 3Dstyle buttons. You can choose your favorite toolbar appearance from these choices, and in addition to the appearance, you can also customize the number of buttons and the order of the buttons on the toolbar.
To customize the appearance of the IDM toolbar, you can click the right mouse button on the toolbar, and the right-click setting menu will appear. Or click "View" and then select the toolbar, and the setting menu will also appear (as shown in the figure below).

In the Settings menu, options include setting the toolbar style and toolbar button size. If you need to download a new toolbar, click Get New Toolbar and enter the IDM website to download it.
If you feel that the current toolbar buttons are not in the desired arrangement, select the "Customize Toolbar" or "Customize..." menu item.

As shown in the figure above, you can control the display or arrangement order of the buttons on the IDM toolbar. The window on the left side of the window displays a list of buttons that can be added. The right window shows the order of buttons in the IDM toolbar, click the button option to sort the buttons by "Move up" or "Move Down". You can also add or delete display options through "Add/Remove".
The sorting of the main interface of the downloaded files can also be customized. Right-click on the title and select "Select Column.." or select "Custom List" under View Tasks.

After selecting "Select Columns...", a dialog box will pop up, where you can set the columns that appear in the list, the width of the columns, and the order of the columns. If you want to enable a certain column, you can tick the check box of the column. You can also adjust the order of the displayed columns by using the "Move Up" and "Move Down" buttons (you can also drag the headers directly to change the order of the columns).
