Container network trends in 2023: CNI network plug-ins are becoming popular, and the popularity of Kube-OVN continues to rise

This year, the Kube-OVN community, OSCHINA, and the cloud native community jointly launched the "2022-2023 Container Network Usage Survey", which has attracted the attention of a large number of K8s/container network technicians.

The purpose of this survey is to more intuitively understand the current status of the use of enterprise container networks in various industries, as well as the use of Kube-OVN among community users, so as to more comprehensively evaluate the development direction of container networks and plan more targetedly for the Kube-OVN community. development path.

The one-month survey has been successfully concluded. We have received a total of 288 valid questionnaires from container network practitioners in the Internet, finance, operators, transportation, manufacturing, education, medical and other industries. This report will deeply analyze the first-hand data in the questionnaire, and provide reference for partners who continue to pay attention to the container network solution.

Respondent Profile: The proportion of traditional industries has increased, and the scope of container network plug-in users has gradually expanded

Among the users participating in this survey, development positions accounted for 31%, operation and maintenance 29%, architects 19%, and other 21%. Compared with the previous data, in addition to the practitioners of the above positions, they also attracted DevOps, security, SRE The participation of engineers shows that more and more IT practitioners in subdivided fields are actively paying attention to container network technology.

Among them, users from the Internet industry accounted for 42.71%, a significant drop from 57.3% in the previous period; while traditional enterprises such as finance, operators, government and public utilities, manufacturing, energy, retail, and real estate accounted for 51.04% % , compared with the data of 35.4% in the previous survey, it has been greatly improved. It can be seen that with the popularization of cloud native technology, the use of containers in traditional industries continues to deepen. As an important tool for elastic expansion of containerized applications, service communication, multi-cloud deployment and security management, the container network will surely receive more and more attention.

Data on the container operating environment shows that among the surveyed companies, the proportion of containers running on public clouds and virtual machines is still the highest, but the proportion running on bare metal is increasing year by year, from 45% in the previous period to 50%. Running containers in a bare metal environment means that container applications can directly access physical hardware resources, which can provide better network performance and security, as well as more flexible network configuration options.

User's current network solution usage status: Kube-OVN usage rate is close to Calico

In the survey of the currently adopted container network solutions, the proportion of Kube-OVN adoption has risen rapidly to 47.39%, which is a significant increase from 40% last year, and the utilization rate is close to Calico.

In the survey on the use of IPv6 and dual-stack networks, the number of users using IPv6 or dual-stack container networks in the production environment has increased significantly, reaching 30.21%, far exceeding the 10% in the previous period. It shows that more and more organizations and users are beginning to adopt IPv6 to meet the growing connection demands. There may be a variety of factors driving this growth, including support for IPv6 by network providers and cloud service providers, popularization of IPv6 standards, policy promotion, and increased user demand for more advanced network functions and global interconnection.

At the same time, the network multi-tenancy (VPC) solution and the connection between the container network and the physical network are still the core demands of most users. Users' demand for network multi-tenant solutions stems more from the consideration of security, resource isolation and flexibility, and connecting the container network with the physical network can realize the intercommunication and collaboration between container applications and other network resources, providing more Comprehensive network functionality and resource access.

Expectations for Kube-OVN: Strengthen traffic monitoring and increase remote traffic mirroring

In the survey of using the Kube-OVN function, compared with the overall average trend of the survey data in the previous period, users showed a trend of differentiation in the use of Kube-OVN functions, such as subnet gateway control, fixed IP, Underlay Functions such as /Vlan have been widely used, and new advanced functions such as VPC network and epbf have also been welcomed by more and more users. Multi-subnet support is still one of the most common functions used by users.

In the survey of the capabilities that users pay most attention to when choosing container network tools, more than 60% choose stability, followed by performance and monitoring and operation and maintenance capabilities. This means that for users, stability is of the utmost importance. Container networking tools must be able to run stably in a production environment and provide reliable network connectivity and communication in order to ensure continuity and reliability of applications and services and reduce the risk of disruption and failure.

Users' expectations for the future of Kube-OVN are mainly focused on Layer 7 traffic monitoring. In addition, remote traffic mirroring, DPU support, and IPsec encryption are also mentioned by users. In the future, Kube-OVN will continue to optimize performance and stability, and gradually introduce the above new functions.

Finally, we look forward to more users joining the Kube-OVN community to jointly create higher-performance and better-use container network plug-ins!
