NSX-T Overview
VMware NSX-T™ Data Center provides an agile software-defined infrastructure for building cloud-native application environments.
NSX-T Data Center is focused on networking, security and automation and simplifying operations for emerging application frameworks and architectures with heterogeneous endpoint environments and technology stacks. NSX-T Data Center supports cloud-native applications, bare-metal workloads, multi-hypervisor environments, public clouds, and multiple clouds.
NSX-T Data Center is intended to be managed, operated, and used by development organizations. NSX-T Data Center allows IT and development teams to choose the technology that works best for their applications.
In the same way that server virtualization programmatically creates and manages virtual machines, NSX-T Data Center network virtualization programmatically creates and manages virtual networks.
With network virtualization, the functional equivalent of a network hypervisor reproduces a complete set of Layer 2 through Layer 7 network services (for example, switching, routing, access control, firewall, and QoS) in software. Therefore, any combination of these services (sysins) can be used programmatically to generate a unique isolated virtual network in just a few seconds.
NSX-T Data Center works by implementing three separate but integrated layers: management, control, and data. These planes are implemented as a set of processes, modules, and agents residing on two types of nodes: NSX Managers and transport nodes.
- Each node hosts a management plane agent.
- NSX Manager nodes host API services and management plane cluster daemons.
- NSX Controller nodes host the central control plane cluster daemon.
- Transport nodes host local control plane daemons and forwarding engines.
NSX Manager supports clusters with three nodes, which consolidates Policy Manager, management, and central control services on a cluster of nodes. The NSX Manager cluster provides high availability (sysin) for the user interface and API. The convergence of management and control plane nodes reduces the number of virtual appliances that must be deployed and managed by NSX-T Data Center administrators.
NSX Manager appliances come in three different sizes for different deployment scenarios:
- The small form factor is suitable for lab or proof of concept deployments.
- Medium appliances are suitable for deployments of up to 64 hosts.
- Large appliances are for customers deploying to large environments.
