The measure process of ViewGroup

In the last article, we talked about the measure process of View. In this article, we talk about the measure process of ViewGroup. We know that for ViewGroup, it not only measures itself, but also traverses the measure element of the child element. But the onMeasure method is not defined in ViewGroup, but it defines the measureChildren method. Let's take a look at this method:

  protected void measureChildren(int widthMeasureSpec, int heightMeasureSpec) {
        final int size = mChildrenCount;
        final View[] children = mChildren;
        for (int i = 0; i < size; ++i) {
            final View child = children[i];
            if ((child.mViewFlags & VISIBILITY_MASK) != GONE) {
                measureChild(child, widthMeasureSpec, heightMeasureSpec);
            }
        }
    }

Let's see what this code does. He traverses the child elements, and calls the measureChild method, passing in the child view as a parameter:

  protected void measureChild(View child, int parentWidthMeasureSpec,
            int parentHeightMeasureSpec) {
        final LayoutParams lp = child.getLayoutParams();

        final int childWidthMeasureSpec = getChildMeasureSpec(parentWidthMeasureSpec,
                mPaddingLeft + mPaddingRight, lp.width);
        final int childHeightMeasureSpec = getChildMeasureSpec(parentHeightMeasureSpec,
                mPaddingTop + mPaddingBottom, lp.height);

        child.measure(childWidthMeasureSpec, childHeightMeasureSpec);
    }

Here, first call getLayoutParams to obtain the LayoutParams attribute of the sub-element, then obtain the measureSpec of the sub-element and call the measure method of the sub-element to measure. What is written in the getChildMeasureSpec method:

 public static int getChildMeasureSpec(int spec, int padding, int childDimension) {
        int specMode = MeasureSpec.getMode(spec);
        int specSize = MeasureSpec.getSize(spec);

        int size = Math.max(0, specSize - padding);

        int resultSize = 0;
        int resultMode = 0;

        switch (specMode) {
        // Parent has imposed an exact size on us
        case MeasureSpec.EXACTLY:
            if (childDimension >= 0) {
                resultSize = childDimension;
                resultMode = MeasureSpec.EXACTLY;
            } else if (childDimension == LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT) {
                // Child wants to be our size. So be it.
                resultSize = size;
                resultMode = MeasureSpec.EXACTLY;
            } else if (childDimension == LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT) {
                // Child wants to determine its own size. It can't be
                // bigger than us.
                resultSize = size;
                resultMode = MeasureSpec.AT_MOST;
            }
            break;

        // Parent has imposed a maximum size on us
        case MeasureSpec.AT_MOST:
            if (childDimension >= 0) {
                // Child wants a specific size... so be it
                resultSize = childDimension;
                resultMode = MeasureSpec.EXACTLY;
            } else if (childDimension == LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT) {
                // Child wants to be our size, but our size is not fixed.
                // Constrain child to not be bigger than us.
                resultSize = size;
                resultMode = MeasureSpec.AT_MOST;
            } else if (childDimension == LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT) {
                // Child wants to determine its own size. It can't be
                // bigger than us.
                resultSize = size;
                resultMode = MeasureSpec.AT_MOST;
            }
            break;

        // Parent asked to see how big we want to be
        case MeasureSpec.UNSPECIFIED:
            if (childDimension >= 0) {
                // Child wants a specific size... let them have it
                resultSize = childDimension;
                resultMode = MeasureSpec.EXACTLY;
            } else if (childDimension == LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT) {
                // Child wants to be our size... find out how big it should
                // be
                resultSize = View.sUseZeroUnspecifiedMeasureSpec ? 0 : size;
                resultMode = MeasureSpec.UNSPECIFIED;
            } else if (childDimension == LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT) {
                // Child wants to determine its own size.... find out how
                // big it should be
                resultSize = View.sUseZeroUnspecifiedMeasureSpec ? 0 : size;
                resultMode = MeasureSpec.UNSPECIFIED;
            }
            break;
        }
        //noinspection ResourceType
        return MeasureSpec.makeMeasureSpec(resultSize, resultMode);
    }

The first parameter this method receives is the parentMeasureSpec. That is to say, the MeasureSpec attribute of the child element is obtained according to the MeasureSpec mode of the parent container combined with the LayoutParams attribute of the child element. One thing to note is that if the MeasureSpec attribute of the parent container is AT_MOST and the LayoutParams attribute of the child element is WRAP_CONTENT, then the above code:

else if (childDimension == LayoutParams.WRAP_CONTENT) {
                // Child wants to determine its own size. It can't be
                // bigger than us.
                resultSize = size;
                resultMode = MeasureSpec.AT_MOST;
            }

We found that the MeasureSpec attribute of the child element is also AT_MOST. The value of his specSize is the specSize of the parent container minus the value of padding. In other words, this is the same as setting the LayoutParams property of the child element to match_parent. To solve this problem. You need to specify the default width and height when the LayoutParams attribute is wrap_content. ViewGroup does not provide an onMeasure method, but allows its subclasses to implement their own measurement methods. The reason is that ViewGroup has different layout requirements, which cannot be unified. Next, let's just look at the measure process of a ViewGroup subclass LinerLayout. Now let's take a look at its onMeasure method. code show as below:

  @Override
    protected void onMeasure(int widthMeasureSpec, int heightMeasureSpec) {
        if (mOrientation == VERTICAL) {
            measureVertical(widthMeasureSpec, heightMeasureSpec);
        } else {
            measureHorizontal(widthMeasureSpec, heightMeasureSpec);
        }
    }

The logic of this method seems very simple. First, if it is determined that it is in the vertical direction, the measureVertical method is called. Otherwise the measureHorizontal method is called. Let's take a look at the measureVertical method:

 void measureVertical(int widthMeasureSpec, int heightMeasureSpec) {
        mTotalLength = 0;
        int maxWidth = 0;
        int childState = 0;

        boolean allFillParent = true;
        float totalWeight = 0;

        final int count = getVirtualChildCount();

        final int widthMode = MeasureSpec.getMode(widthMeasureSpec);
        final int heightMode = MeasureSpec.getMode(heightMeasureSpec);

        boolean matchWidth = false;
        boolean skippedMeasure = false;

        final int baselineChildIndex = mBaselineAlignedChildIndex;
        final boolean useLargestChild = mUseLargestChild;

        int consumedExcessSpace = 0;

        int nonSkippedChildCount = 0;

        // See how tall everyone is. Also remember max width.
        for (int i = 0; i < count; ++i) {
            final View child = getVirtualChildAt(i);
            if (child == null) {
                mTotalLength += measureNullChild(i);
                continue;
            }

            if (child.getVisibility() == View.GONE) {
               i += getChildrenSkipCount(child, i);
               continue;
            }

            nonSkippedChildCount++;
            if (hasDividerBeforeChildAt(i)) {
                mTotalLength += mDividerHeight;
            }

            final LayoutParams lp = (LayoutParams) child.getLayoutParams();

            totalWeight += lp.weight;

            final boolean useExcessSpace = lp.height == 0 && lp.weight > 0;
            if (heightMode == MeasureSpec.EXACTLY && useExcessSpace) {

This code has three hundred lines, which is quite a lot. But the principle is not difficult. The general process is that mTotalLength is defined to store the height of LinerLayout in the vertical direction. Then traverse the sub-elements and calculate the height of each sub-element separately according to the MeasureSpec mode. If it is wrap_content, add the height of each child element and the vertical height of margin and assign it to mTotalLength. Finally, add the value of padding in the vertical direction. If the layout height is set to macth_parent or a specific value, it is the same as the measure process of View.
