Long-term data on the establishment of national and provincial development zones (1970-2022)

Today, when policy evaluation based on causal inference methods is popular in economics research, the practice of econometrically modeling an important policy as an exogenous shock is the "darling" of many top journal papers. The super-long-term data of the establishment of provincial development zones is just one of the representatives.
People's governments at all levels in our country regard the establishment of development zones as an important policy means to realize industrial agglomeration in the region and promote regional economic growth. Existing studies have shown that the establishment of development zones has heterogeneous policy effects on the growth of enterprises within the jurisdiction (Li Ben et al., 2018), which affects the M&A behavior and performance of enterprises within the jurisdiction (Cai Qingfeng et al., 2020), and promotes the growth of enterprises in the administrative area. The scientific and technological innovation of domestic colleges and universities (Kang Yankun et al., 2022); the upgrading of provincial-level development zones to national-level development zones has effectively promoted the improvement of urban economic efficiency (Kong Lingcheng et al., 2021); national-level development zones have promoted the innovation of enterprises within their jurisdictions, Provincial-level development zones (Cai Qingfeng et al., 2021); in addition, the development model of development zones has a tendency to involute, and as time goes by, the role of driving regional economic growth gradually weakens (Huang Xinzao et al., 2022).

Relevant results have been published in top journals such as "Management World", "China Industrial Economics", "Quantitative Economics, Technical Economics Research", and "Financial Research". In view of this, the long-term data of the establishment of national and provincial development zones from 1970 to 2022 has been compiled and published, including data in dta format that can be opened directly by Stata + data in shp format that needs to be opened and edited by geographic information science software such as ArcGIS, for everyone to use.
