Vim is a powerful, versatile and free open source text editor. The original abbreviation of the project was Vi IMitation, because Bram's goal at that time was only to completely replicate the functions of Vi, so the name was also an abbreviation of Vi IMitation (simulation).

Bram released the first version in 1991; in 1992, version 1.22 of Vim was ported to UNIX and MS-DOS. Since then, with the continuous increase of functions, Vim's full name has become Vi IMproved (improved).

Vim is currently one of the most popular text editors, especially among programmers, and is tied with Emacs as the favorite editor for Unix-like system users. Bram has devoted much of his life to Vim, creating, maintaining, and continuously improving the software; he has made an indelible and significant contribution to the open source software movement.

In addition to developing Vim, Bram is an advocate for ICCF Holland, an NGO supporting AIDS patients in Uganda. He uses Vim as a platform to drive charitable giving. Every time users download Vim, they are prompted to consider donating to  ICCF Holland  .
