Problem: Snapping does not work when editing data in ArcMap

Problem: Snapping does not work when editing data in ArcMap

illustrate

When editing, the snap command does not work as expected. Unable to join features because the pointer does not snap to edges and vertices in the map document.

reason

This problem can be caused by one of the following reasons:

  • Snapping option disabled

  • The current editing session is inactive

  • Map document displayed in layout view

Use layout view when creating maps. Editing is recommended while the map is displayed in data view. Since commands cannot interact with data in Layout view, snapping cannot be used.

  • The data or map document is corrupted

If the data or document is corrupted, the map cannot be changed.

  • Snap tolerance not set correctly

The pointer automatically snaps to a vertex or edge if the pointer is within the snapping tolerance of the feature. If the tolerance is set too low (such as 0), the pointer will not snap.

solution or workaround

Please follow the steps below to resolve this issue.

  1. Make sure the Use Snapping setting is enabled. For more information, see the following ArcGIS Web Help topic: Enabling Snapping.

  1. Make sure the map document is displayed in the data view. For more information, see the following ArcGIS Web Help topic: Displaying maps in data view and layout view.

If you are still unable to use the snap command after following the above steps, please use the options below until the problem is resolved.

Option A: Restart the editing session

  1. Closes the currently open editing session.

  2. Start a new editing session. To do this, see the following ArcGIS Web Help topic: Starting an Editing Session (Starting Editing).

Option B: Export data to a new blank map document

  1. Create a new blank template in ArcMap.

  2. Use the Export Data or Add Data commands. For more information on these commands, see the following ArcGIS Web Help topics: Export selected features and add layers to a map using the Export Data command.

WARNING:
Do not copy and paste, or drag and drop data from one file to another, as this may result in data or file corruption.

Option C: Set Snap Tolerance to Higher Pixels

To do this, see the following ArcGIS Web Help topic: Setting snapping tolerances.

Note:
Make sure the Endpoint Snap button is highlighted on the Snapping toolbar.
