On July 8, Yan Ning, a well-known biologist, founding president of the Shenzhen Academy of Medical Sciences (preparation), and director of the Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, posted a new Weibo, saying that she recently participated in a doctoral candidate promotion interview and was able to enter this university . The interviewees are basically undergraduates and masters with the best qualifications in the field of biomedicine in China . Some also published more than one academic paper.

In addition to the regular Q&A, Yan Ning asked almost everyone a question without a standard answer, but the result:

"There are more than 20 students, but no one's answer makes my eyes shine."

"Nearly half of the students said that they have not thought about this kind of problem." This has also aroused widespread concern and discussion among academic circles, especially among newcomers to scientific research. The full text of Weibo is as follows:

[The preaching taste is very strong, don't enter if you don't like it; if you offend, I don't want it, I apologize in advance; it's just a throwing brick to attract jade]

Recently, I participated in a doctoral candidate waiver interview. Those who can enter this round of interviews are basically the undergraduates and masters with the best qualifications that can be recruited in the domestic biomedical field. In addition to the regular questions and answers, I asked almost everyone a question without a standard answer, but none of the more than 20 students answered my eyes . The habit from being a teaching assistant is to ask the most tricky questions and score the highest marks; the former is to force people to think; the latter, I always think that after entering the university, the score is no longer so important).

The question I am asking is:

Assume that 10 years later, you have become a PI (Principal Investigator, that is, a doctoral supervisor who independently leads a laboratory), and you have all the resources you need (excellent scientific research team, sufficient funds, perfect experimental equipment, A lot of time), what is the scientific question you most want to explore? In other words, if there are any scientific or technical problems in this life, if you can solve or make a breakthrough, you will feel that you have no regrets in this life?

Maybe it’s because this question is too atypical and the interview is too tense. Nearly half of the students honestly said that they haven’t thought about this kind of question at this stage, and they won’t be able to think of it for a while (thank you very much for your sincerity, this is also a good answer) ;Some students talked about specific small problems in the literature; some students talked about some areas of interest in general, but when asked which laboratories are in this direction, they were at a loss...

These students have high academic performance, otherwise they would not be able to enter the interview; some students have even published more than one academic paper (but except for one of them, if you randomly ask about the experimental details involved in a paper, you can’t tell much about it. clear……).

I reflected on whether it is too early to ask this question for undergraduates , but I always look forward to one or two students who can open their minds and talk about it—life, old age, sickness and death are the research objects of life sciences, which really does not make people feel sincere Want to delve into it?

In fact, this question is also one of the most frequently discussed topics in my chats with young PIs in the past few months: you have such a good starting point and supporting conditions, you must dream big & aim high! There is no need to just search for your scientific problems in the literature, because most of these problems are not truly original; don’t always follow the direction and routine of your previous PhD or postdoctoral laboratory; don’t set limits for yourself If you go to nature, clinics, and society to observe conditions, you will find that there are always good problems everywhere .

Humans have a little more knowledge, so many unsolved mysteries are waiting for us; the scientific research and training in the past few years and more than ten years have given you abilities, weapons, and scientific methods. Being a PI, you can be a bird Fei, the most important first step is to find problems that are worth a lot of time and energy for you and your team.

This is actually for himself. mutual encouragement439ee08af0e6e235f2851d47383cef64.png
