deepin V23 successfully adapted to WSL

The deepin development team announced that in the released deepin V23 beta version, it is now officially adapted to WSL.

WSL is the abbreviation of Windows Subsystem for Linux, which is a technology that allows users to run Linux on Windows. WSL allows you to freely switch or integrate between Windows and Linux, use open source tools and environments to develop or test Linux-related projects, and at the same time enjoy Windows' hardware support and performance optimization, run Linux applications and experience various Linux distribution.

The team said they chose a WSL2-based adaptation solution, because WSL2 provides WSLg extensions, which can improve performance, enhance system call compatibility, and allow users to enjoy the beautiful interface and powerful functions of deepin on Windows.

As a new feature from Microsoft, WSLg allows users to run Linux GUI applications in WSL2 and seamlessly integrate them into the Windows desktop. WSLg includes a Wayland server, an RDP client, and a PulseAudio server to support graphics, audio, and input devices.

At present, deepin WSL is still in the testing stage, and there are some problems or deficiencies in performance, compatibility, stability, etc. The team says it is doing more testing on the app to find and fix issues and improve the user experience.

The following is the rendering of some deepin self-developed applications running with WSLg:

  • Deepin Terminal

  • Deepin Album

  • Display application list under Windows menu bar

After completing the installation of the deepin WSL application, start it again, and the registered and installed deepin application will be displayed under the Windows menu bar.

The deepin-rootfs ( https://github.com/deepin-community/deepin-rootfs ) project under the deepin-community organization has released the packaging of root files and WSLDL, which users can download by themselves. The team also expressed plans to release deepin WSL to the Microsoft App Store, making it easier for users to download and update.

If you want to try Linux or use deepin's application on Windows, you can download it from deepin.zip ( https://cdimage.deepin.com/WSL/deepin.zip ).
