1 Definition of digital twin
Digital twin (Digital Twin) is to make full use of physical models , sensor updates, operation history and other data, integrate multi-disciplinary, multi- physical quantities , multi-scale , multi-probability simulation process , complete the mapping in the virtual space, so as to reflect the corresponding physical equipment whole life cycle process. A digital twin is a concept beyond reality that can be viewed as a digital twin of one or more important, interdependent equipment systems.
The work on digital twins falls into two broad categories according to their nature:
1. The focus of the work is how to carry out engineering applications and solve practical problems;
2. The focus of the work is to explore the operation mechanism, operation method or operation mode of the digital twin itself.
2 Proposal of digital twin
NASA first proposed the concept of digital twin (Digital Twin) .
It is defined as : "A digital twin is an integrated simulation of a vehicle or system with multiple physical quantities and multiple spatial scales, which uses the most effective physical model, update of sensor data, flight History, etc., to mirror the living state of its corresponding twin object in flight.”

3 Development of digital twin
Michael Grieves proposed the PLM concept model for the first time . In the model, there are real space, virtual space, data flow from real space to virtual space, information flow from virtual space to real space , and the expression of virtual subspace.
Gartner digital twins further divide digital twins into three categories :
● Discrete digital twin: A virtual replica of a single product/equipment, person or task, used to monitor and optimize individual assets, people and other physical resources.
●Composite digital twin (Composite digital twin): used to monitor and optimize the combined use of discrete digital twins connected together, such as multi-component systems such as cars and industrial machines.
●Digital twin of organizations (DTOs): DTOs are virtual models of complex and large entities, composed of digital twins of their constituent parts. DTOs are used to monitor and optimize the performance of high-level services.
A digital twin, succinctly defined as a digital representation of a physical object.
4 Other perspectives
● This is only a "concept" or "idea" , but the technical requirements under this concept are neither clear nor unique.
● In my opinion, the digital twin does not have its own unique technical connotation . It is more realistic to position digital twins as a concept or method rather than a technology. Or it is more meaningful to position the digital twin as an integrated application mode of simulation, system engineering, Internet of Things, big data, etc.
● Digital twins, which are essentially representations of physical objects in the digital world . Before the advent of computers, we lacked the technological means to realize this idea. After the birth of computers, especially after their popularization, there are technical means to realize the representation of physical objects in computers , so the concept of digital twins, even if it is not explicitly proposed, has actually been practiced in practice .
