Dell computer uses virtual machine to install ubuntu system in mobile hard disk

After tinkering twice, I finally successfully installed the ubuntu system on the mobile hard disk. The personal computer model is Latitude E7470, the mobile hard disk is a Western Digital 1T mechanical hard disk, using efi boot, and the 20.04ubuntu system.

Steps that are easy to step on:

first pit

First of all, if there are other files in the mobile hard disk, and it takes up a lot. It needs to be considered to divide the mobile hard disk into two parts, the first part is used to install the ubuntu system, and the second is used as a mobile hard disk.

The approximate steps are to use the DiskGenius tool to first create a partition in the free area, which will be used as a mobile hard disk in the future. Then you will now have two drive letters, which are actually a mobile hard disk. In fact, just like the c drive and d drive of your own computer, divide a hard disk into multiple partitions.

If the original drive letter of your mobile hard disk is E, then the drive letter of the new partition is probably F. Then you need to copy your original files in the E drive to the F drive. Because the E disk is in front of the mobile hard disk, we need to install ubuntu to the E disk.

Why should the system be installed in front of the mobile hard disk? It is because when looking for the system to boot, it seems that only the first 100 G will be searched.

For details on how to use the DiskGenius tool, you can search by yourself.

second pit

Use the DiskGenius tool to first divide the E disk of the mobile hard disk into various partitions required by Ubuntu, generally divided into efi boot area/swap area/root directory mounting area/home mounting area. It is not recommended to use ubuntu to operate on the partition size during installation, just modify the format and function of each partition directly. Because the partition may fail during ubuntu installation, this is the experience of the blogger.

For the specific size of each partition on the E disk used to install ubuntu, you can refer to this blog post (nanny-style teaching) Win10 + Ubuntu 20.04——dual system installation method + configuration graphics card + root permission + flash deployment_Qiang Qin's Silent Roasted Sheep Blog-CSDN blog_Introduction  to the size of the ubuntu system partition, other information can also be referred to.

third pit

The blogger is not encountering other problems, and ubuntu is also installed successfully.

The only regret is that it is still not possible to plug in the mobile hard disk and start up with ubuntu, and unplug it to start with windows. Every time I enter the bios, I find that the boot sequence will return to the default, and I can only press F12 to select it every time to enter the ubuntu system, but it is also perfect.

2023-06-18 Update

I bought a new solid-state hard drive and needed to reinstall ubuntu, and then found that the virtual machine could not connect to the mobile hard drive, and even the window for connecting to the mobile hard drive was grayed out. For specific solutions, refer to

Replace the windows virtual machine mentioned in the article with your ubuntu virtual machine, find the . vmx file, and there will be no problem after modification.
