ArcGIS Pro Navigation Tools

The main navigation tools are Browse Tool , Screen Navigator , Bookmarks , Go To XY Tool .

Others include linked views, map scale (2D), scene height (3D), pause and refresh drawing, camera properties, navigating in 3D, keyboard shortcuts, and more.

1 Primary Navigation Tool

The default tools for maps and scenes are the Explore tools for moving, panning, identifying feature attributes through pop-ups, and zooming in and out on maps and scenes.

When you pan the map or scene with the mouse, the pointer changes to a hand. Right-click and hold the mouse button, then move the mouse up and down to zoom. When the right mouse button is clicked, the pointer changes to a magnifying glass.

The view will be centered and zoomed in on the extent of a set of selected features

Zoom in at a fixed ratio / Zoom out at a fixed ratio

Zooms in or out by a fixed distance, zooming to a single selected feature will zoom to its full geometric extent, but when zooming to a single selected point, the view will zoom by a fixed percentage

Previous View / Next View

Each change within the map view will be stored, moving forward or backward in the list of map views, moving the view back to the previous view or forward to the next view if the view exists

go to XY

Displays on-screen controls to view or edit camera coordinates, orientation, and field of view angles, changing the unit format of the position as desired to match the coordinate system used in the map

Rectangular Zoom (adds this tool to the Quick Access Toolbar library)

Zoom in on the area of interest by clicking and dragging a rectangular extent on the map or scene, and the view extent will update to fit the dragged rectangle

Rectangular Zoom Out (Quick Access Toolbar library adds this tool)

Zoom out the area of interest by clicking and dragging a rectangle in the map or scene, the view range will be centered and expanded according to the size of the rectangle

 2 screen navigator

The screen navigator provides camera navigation commands with a single control in the lower left corner of the view. Explicit camera controls are useful for navigating complex content, especially underground, inside buildings, or 3D scenes containing lidar. Rotate around target point for inspection and editing in 3D. The navigator always indicates north, and a cardinal point on the navigator can be clicked to reorient. Controls are adapted for touchscreen interaction.

The navigator in the minimized state only shows the title

Show navigator in map (2D)

Full control of navigator functions in 2D mode

Show navigator in scene (3D)

Full control of navigator functions in 3D mode

Click the Navigator button in the Navigation group of the View tab to hide or display the Navigator, and drag the upper right corner to adjust the size of the control.

In minimized display mode, the navigator will only display the north arrow. Additional buttons can be used in 3D to toggle between flat and first-person navigation modes. Click and drag the outer ring to pan the map or scene. Transparent arrows indicate translation direction and speed. Click the north arrow to reset the camera to face north.

In maximized display mode, the view can be rotated, zoomed and turned east, west or south in the 2D map. In a 3D scene, you can rotate the view direction, pivot on the target point in all three axes, zoom based on the target point, move the camera up and down, and look around from the current camera position.

Toggle navigator mode

Changes the navigator's display view to bearing mode (pan and north arrow only), or full control mode.

Move up (↑) / Move down (↓)

Available only in 3D mode, moves the camera vertically up or down. The x,y direction and orientation of the camera will be maintained.

Adjust the size of the navigator

Drag to resize the navigator. The large size may be more suitable for touch screen use. The default size is a customizable property when opening the navigator in new maps and scenes.

Zoom in forward (+) / Zoom out backward (-)

Continuously zooms in or out the view. In 3D mode, the camera's viewing angle remains the same.

facing the main direction

The arrows of the outer ring are clickable. Click to rotate the view orientation to face the specified cardinal direction (N/S/E/W).

translation (outer ring)

Continuously pans the camera horizontally in 2D and 3D modes. Click the ring for short panning movements, click and hold the ring for continuous panning within the view in the direction of the pointer. The speed of the camera depends on the dragging distance from the ring. Hovering the pointer near the center of the navigator slows down the panning speed.

Rotate around target (x,y) - manipulate inner ring

Available only in 3D, rotate in x, y, z directions to rotate and tilt the camera. The north arrow on the outer ring rotates as a directional guide for visual feedback. Click the ring and drag left or right to rotate in the x and y directions about the center target location. Move the ring up and down to tilt the camera. Target needs to be ground or feature.

look around

The camera looks in all directions while remaining steady. This behavior   is the same as using the B keyboard shortcut for the Browse tool. When using the native lookaround feature, the other rings and north arrows are updated at the same time to keep the view orientation up to date.

plane navigation

When navigating with the mouse, the camera is constrained to maintain the current viewing angle and distance. Panning through the scene in this state feels like moving a camera on an on-screen display.

first person navigation

The camera will use the pedestrian's perspective to navigate the scene. Use the keyboard to move the camera and the mouse pointer to look around to navigate in 3D. The camera moves while keeping the elevation at a constant level, and you can adjust the speed with the middle mouse button or by clicking the speed control that appears below the button when first-person navigation is active.

2.1 First-person navigation mode (exists in 3D navigation mode)

In first-person navigation mode, use the keyboard to move the camera and the mouse pointer to set the direction of travel. Press the arrow keys to continue moving and use the mouse to look around. Also known as strafing, this form of navigation is common in computer games. In this mode, the mouse pointer changes to a crosshair. The speed is displayed as a horizontal bar below the corresponding icon on the navigator control and can be adjusted. Use the mouse wheel to change the speed or click on the speed bar. The greater the fill of the speed indicator color, the faster the speed. Temporary arrows appear next to the speed indicator when the speed of scrolling active content increases or decreases.
