Introduction to Network Flow Control Technology

Network traffic control technology ensures that virtual machines in the same cloud computing data center can obtain reliable network bandwidth, which is an important technology in cloud computing data centers. In actual operation, the actual control right of the virtual machine belongs to the tenants, and network traffic control is to ensure the interests of each tenant and ensure that the access traffic of the tenants remains in a stable state. In general, there are two ways to implement flow control: network device control and physical host control, as shown in Figure 1.

Figure 1 Network flow control

Network device control can be realized by limiting the upper limit of bandwidth for each port on the switch, but because there is no unified standard for the command interface of the current switch, it will cause incompatibility when dynamically controlling the flow of virtual machines in the cloud computing environment , such as by moving a virtual machine's network configuration from one switch to another. This problem can be solved by means of software adaptation.

Based on the control of the physical host, the work of flow limitation is distributed to each physical machine, and the flow limitation is performed on the virtual network card of each virtual machine in the operating system of the physical machine. Since the physical machine operating system can be selected and deployed in a unified manner, and the network traffic control on the operating system has de facto standards, the above-mentioned problems caused by network-based device control are avoided.
