A new breakthrough in efficient hydrogen energy storage! Proton Power SOEC/SOFC reversible stack project started

Following the undertaking of the CGN SOEC dedicated stack project in October 2022 and the official commissioning of the first phase of the MW-level cell and stack production line at the Qingdao production base in January 2023, Beijing Proton Power Generation Technology Co., Ltd., which has been at the forefront of domestic SOEC industrialization The company once again reported new actions in the research and development of battery sheets and stacks. On May 30, Proton Power officially announced the launch of the research and development and industrialization of SOEC/SOFC reversible stacks (ReSOC), expanding the application scenarios of the company's products to the field of hydrogen energy storage. ——The "high-efficiency hydrogen energy storage SOEC/SOFC (ReSOC) reversible battery stack research and development project" project support, the results will be put into operation in the State Grid Ningxia Electric Power Company.

SOEC and SOFC have inherent technical advantages for hydrogen energy storage applications: First, the structure and raw material system of the two stacks are very similar; in addition, SOEC and SOFC are the highest efficiency technical routes in the fields of hydrogen production by electrolysis of water and fuel cell power generation, respectively. ReSOC reversible stack is the core component of high-efficiency two-way conversion of electricity and hydrogen, which can be widely used in "electricity-hydrogen-electricity" long-term energy storage, as well as distributed heat and power cogeneration + electrolytic water hydrogen production project scenarios. This R&D result simplifies the traditional one SOEC + one SOFC hydrogen energy storage system into a single ReSOC system, which greatly improves the energy storage efficiency of the system while significantly reducing investment intensity. Moreover, the research and development of ReSOC reversible stacks and systems will also help to promote the progress and development of SOEC and SOFC unidirectional technologies.

On May 30, experts from the State Grid Smart Grid Research Institute, Proton Power, the research and development unit of the "Double Innovation Project", and State Grid Ningxia Electric Power Company, the project commissioning unit, held a project kick-off meeting using a combination of online and offline methods. Tan Peng, deputy chief engineer and director of the Science and Technology Department of State Grid Ningxia Electric Power Research Institute, pointed out that the State Grid Double Innovation Project "High-efficiency hydrogen energy storage SOEC/SOFC (ReSOC) reversible battery stack" undertaken by State Grid Ningxia Electric Power Research Institute and Proton Power R&D project" has been highly recognized by industry experts. The approval and implementation of the project is an important sign that State Grid pays attention to and attaches great importance to the development of long-term hydrogen energy storage technology. The promotion of the project has also played a positive role in promoting the transformation of State Grid Ningxia Electric Power Research Institute's exploration of scientific and technological achievements.

As a leading enterprise in China's SOEC field, Proton Power is accelerating the industrialization process of China's SOC and shortening the gap with foreign leading enterprises. The company has mastered the "casting-lamination-co-sintering-screen printing-sintering" and stacking process and technology of fuel-level supported large-area flat-panel batteries, as well as key technical indicators such as battery power density, thermal cycle characteristics, and stability. Reach the international advanced level. The ReSOC reversible button battery has been successfully prepared and has good performance. After the project is launched, Proton Power will focus on the development of large-area new flat-plate batteries based on the technical characteristics of the reversible stack, and make every effort to tackle the problem of ReSOC stacks that can operate in both directions and their consistency. Promoting the industrialization of the first SOEC/SOFC reversible stack and system with independent intellectual property rights in China. In the future, there will be a huge hydrogen energy storage application market and promotion prospects in Northwest, Northeast and other regions with abundant installed capacity of renewable energy.
