Telechips Dolphin3 boosts display diversity with Imagination's automotive-grade hardware virtualization

For several years, Telechips, the world's leading fabless semiconductor company, and Imagination, a world-class semiconductor IP company, have been exploring technologies to raise the level of the automotive industry.

By integrating Imagination's world-class automotive-grade graphics processing unit design into Telechips' leading automotive processors, clusters and in-vehicle infotainment systems can be run from a single processing unit, providing automakers with a simpler and more efficient solution. Cockpit Solutions.

Introduction to Dolphin3

The TCC805x (Dolphin3) processor family is mainly aimed at in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), cockpit and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Based on the rich market knowledge accumulated by Telechips over the past ten years, Dolphin3 adopts Imagination's PowerVR Series9XTP graphics processor core to provide powerful performance for 2D and 3D graphics, realizing a rich and vivid user interface. The Dolphin3 processor uses Series9XTP's HyperLane hardware virtualization technology to implement a non-supervisor cockpit (HLC) solution.

The solution not only manages multi-display and multi-channel camera inputs, but also manipulates the image signal processing subsystem and built-in microcontroller system, helping to create a "safety island" for functional safety.

Today, the automotive industry relies on high-performance GPUs to manage graphics processing such as video and imaging in various applications. To this end, Imagination provides customers with cost-effective solutions through its leading IP.

For the driver, the instrument panel must continuously and uninterruptedly display the main instrument information, such as speed, battery power, engine status and other key information. Other functions such as in-vehicle infotainment and satellite navigation, while important, are not urgent. To meet the needs of mass market manufacturers, these functions need to be provided in an economical and reliable manner.

On Dolphin3 powered by an Imagination PowerVR Series9XTP GPU, these two sets of tasks can safely run simultaneously on the same GPU. Critical tasks such as the main instrument cluster can be prioritized, guaranteeing them the performance needed to maintain service quality levels, while less critical tasks can use the remaining available capacity. Additionally, hardware virtualization keeps critical driver display information protected from any potential problems with other workloads.

With these key features, Dolphin3 is currently being used by many Tier 1 car companies around the world to develop their own digital cockpit systems.

While virtualization can be achieved in several ways, these generally require a hypervisor or container. And through the hardware virtualization integrated in PowerVR Series9XTP, Dolphin3 can provide a more flexible and economical method for running multiple applications on a single system-on-chip (SoC).

With hardware virtualization inside the PowerVR Series9XTP GPU, Dolphin3 provides a "hypervisor solution" (HLS) that enables the deployment of multiple operating systems (Linux, Android, QNX, etc.).

Dolphin3's HLS technology enables different applications running on different operating systems to be deployed on one processor at the same time, providing manufacturers with an economical and secure method of managing multiple applications without the cost or complexity of using a hypervisor sex.

Dolphin3 not only provides digital instrument clusters, but also provides other applications such as surround view monitoring (AVM) and head-up display (HUD), which are safer and less costly than traditional solutions.

Previously, the only way to safely run multiple operating systems was to configure multiple GPUs. Being able to run multiple operating systems on Dolphin3 (TCC805x) brings many benefits. Since only one GPU is required, silicon usage is reduced without compromising performance, thereby reducing manufacturing costs and power consumption of the end-silicon solution.

In addition, the cost savings associated with using built-in hardware virtualization by avoiding the costs associated with using a hypervisor enables both Telechips and its customers to reduce their cost of ownership.

PowerVR Series9XTP

PowerVR Series9XTP is based on Imagination's well-known tiled deferred rendering architecture, which includes a wider ALU design, PVRIC4 visually lossless image compression, advanced scalable computing cluster architecture, and high-efficiency compression technologies such as parametric compression and PVRTC™ texture compression. It also provides an architecture with enhanced scheduling capabilities and a dedicated housekeeping processor.

Imagination is also committed to creating first-class hardware IP and high-quality software, combining the two seamlessly into a powerful, high-quality terminal solution. Additionally, customers can easily adapt their pre-developed software, reducing complex software layers and simplifying the debug environment.
