Ubuntu22.04 LTS cannot implement drag-and-drop copying using open-vm-tools
environment:
- Host: Windows10
- Virtual machine software: VMware Workstation Pro 17.0
- Virtual machine system: Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 LTS
- 软件:open-vm-tools (open-vm-tools-desktop)
Some time ago, after installing ubuntu22.04 LTS on VMware17, using the vmware-tools that comes with the vm software has been failing to install. Later, I learned that there is open-vm-tools (this is open source, and it is also recommended by the official), so I decided to install it. This, but after the installation is complete, the drag-and-drop copy operation between the host and the virtual machine still cannot be realized, and a prompt "drag-and-drop operation is not supported" will appear, and only the clipboard can be connected. After searching for a long time, I realized that I needed to switch to xorg.
The following is the installation method
There are two parts in total, the first is installation open-vm-tools
(this is the premise, if it is a desktop system, it needs to be installed open-vm-tools-desktop
); then switch toxorg
1. Install open-vm-tools
It must be installed first open-vm-tools
. Install directly using apt, there are two in total, one is open-vm-tools
and the other is open-vm-tools-desktop
, the former is required, if you are using the ubuntu desktop version, you need to install both.
sudo apt install open-vm-tools
If it is not installed automatically open-vm-tools-desktop
, install it manually
sudo apt install open-vm-tools-desktop
2. Switch to xorg
2.1 Log out and log in after entering the system
Note: Here you need to log out the user, do not use lock or restart the system directly , the interface after locking or restarting cannot be set to switch to xorg, only after logging out
After logging out, you will enter the user login selection interface
2.2 Switch to xorg
Select a user to log in, I only have one user here, choose directly, note: do not enter the password at this time . At this time, pay attention to the lower right corner, there is a gear.
Click the gear in the lower right corner to switch toUbuntu on Xorg
2.3 Drag and drop files
Next, enter the password, log in, try dragging and copying again, and
you can freely copy between the host and the virtual machine folder (here, take the download folder as an example), and then drag and drop to successfully copy the file.
