Google optimizes Chrome again, up to 30% faster

In March of last year, Google had greatly optimized the performance of Chrome 99, making it score 300 points in the Speedometer benchmark test, and its performance on the Mac surpassed all browsers, including Apple's own Safari browser. In June of last year, the Chrome team made persistent efforts to make the Chrome browser 20% faster on the Mac, with a score of more than 360 points.

According to a press announcement from Google yesterday , Google has made several built-in performance improvements to its browser, giving Chrome for Mac and Android another boost in performance. Google says that a series of tweaks have boosted Chrome's Mac and Android versions by 10 percent and 30 percent, respectively, on the Speedometer 2.1 benchmark.

In a blog post , Google also explained exactly what tweaks they made to achieve this performance boost:

  • Google made some targeted optimizations to the highly used JS functions Object.prototype.toStringand . Array.prototype.joinIt also InterpolableColorincludes .
  • In addition, Google also pointed out that innerHTMLJavaScript is a common way to update the DOM, so it introduced a special fast path for parsing.
  • Pointer compression is used in both V8 and Oilpan (the garbage collector for DOM objects) to save memory. Google has optimized the way it compresses and decompresses pointers, and avoids compressing high-traffic fields. Given that these are higher frequency operations, it has wide-ranging effects on performance. Google also moved frequently accessed objects undefinedlike to the beginning of the memory base, enabling them to be accessed using faster machine code.
  • The Android ecosystem is diverse and includes devices of various functional levels. To maximize Chrome's performance on high-end devices, Google is now targeting these devices with a special version of Chrome that uses compiler flags tuned for speed rather than binary size, enabling Chrome to run on Speedometer 2.1 30% improvement in benchmark scores on .

Although users have been complaining about the resource usage, power consumption and privacy of the Chrome browser for years, Chrome is undoubtedly the fastest in the industry in terms of speed, and Chrome still has the highest market share. browser.

According to Statcounter statistics for March 2023 , the Chrome browser has a 64.8% global market share, while its closest competitor, Safari, has only a 19.5% share across all platforms. On the desktop, Chrome's share is even higher at 65.8%, followed by Edge at 11.12% and Safari at 10.91%.
