Big V Technology Talk | VMware Releases VMware Aria to Promote the Development of Multi-Cloud Management

VMware Aria is powered by VMware Aria Graph, a new graph-based data storage technology that reduces multi-cloud complexity for any cloud, any application and every role

More enterprises are delivering applications across public clouds and at the edge, and they are increasingly using Kubernetes to manage and scale their modern and cloud-native applications. But in a multi-cloud and multi-technology environment, especially public cloud, managing applications and infrastructure is a complex task. Teams must control costs, ensure performance, and manage unified security policies across these diverse, distributed environments. Recently, VMware (NYSE: VMW) announced at VMware Explore 2022 a multi-cloud management portfolio called VMware Aria, which provides an end-to-end solution for managing infrastructure and cloud-native application cost, performance, configuration and delivery . VMware Aria Graph, which drives VMware Aria, is a graph-based data storage technology that captures the complexities of customers' multi-cloud environments.

Purnima Padmanabhan, senior vice president and general manager of cloud management at VMware, said: "As the multi-cloud reality evolves, managing the overall cloud spend, resource utilization, and application performance, security and compliance across clouds can become increasingly difficult. It also leads to overruns, inefficiencies, and increased risk. Developers need cost, performance, security, and configuration data to understand the full characteristics of the application they're building, and that data often resides in disparate tools. VMware Aria's API-first approach Enables developers, SREs, and platform engineering teams to obtain relevant, correlated data from any source to enable faster application analysis and debugging, while providing platform operations, IT operations, and cloud operations teams with applications across cloud environments and complete visibility into workload cost, performance and configuration.”

VMware Aria brings new capabilities and extensions to cloud-native and multi-cloud management in three categories: VMware Aria Cost, VMware Aria Operations, and VMware Aria Automation powered by CloudHealth. VMware Aria complements and extends the management of cloud-native application development, delivery, DevSecOps and lifecycle in the VMware Tanzu platform. VMware Aria, based on VMware Aria Hub, provides centralized view and control for managing the entire multi-cloud environment and leverages the VMware Aria Graph to provide common definitions of applications, resources, roles and accounts. At VMware Explore 2022, VMware also announced a range of new end-to-end solutions. These solutions deliver cloud governance, cloud migration, and business insights at scale.

VMware Aria Graph and VMware Aria Hub: New Technologies Driving VMware Aria

At the heart of VMware Aria's new public cloud management capabilities is the VMware Aria Graph. This graph-based data storage technology captures the resources and relationships of multi-cloud environments. Specifically designed to address the operational challenges of cloud-native applications and environments, VMware Aria Graph provides a single source of data that is updated in near real-time. Other solutions on the market were designed in a slower-moving era, primarily for change management processes and asset tracking. In contrast, VMware Aria Graph is specifically designed for cloud-native operations.

VMware Aria Graph leverages a distinct architecture to capture many-to-many relationships, scale to hundreds of millions of objects, and update them in near real-time, meeting the requirements of the largest and most stringent enterprise multi-cloud management. VMware Aria's graph data storage and API services enable seamless integration with third-party solutions such as observability and application performance management tools. Data collected and normalized in VMware Aria Graph from native public cloud, on-premises cloud, VMware tools and 3rd party tools enriches the operations, automation and cost of customers' existing VMware vRealize, CloudHealth by VMware and VMware Tanzu Observability products Metrics brings application-aware management to private/hybrid cloud in addition to native public cloud.

VMware Aria Graph will be available to customers as a feature of VMware Aria Hub. First announced at VMworld 2021 as Project Ensemble, VMware Aria Hub provides centralized view and control for managing an entire multi-cloud environment.

Key features of VMware Aria Graph include:

Highly scalable - supports cloud-native environments

  • Scalable to hundreds of millions of nodes
  • Graph data stores can capture many-to-many relationships needed to fully understand dependencies
  • Ability to view historical configurations that are critical in root cause analysis

Event-Based Acquisition - Supports High Rates of Change

  • Capture any change event that occurs at any time
  • Capture full granularity

Federated and Modular Architecture - Aggregate data from any source

  • Plug-and-play approach to layer data from third-party tools
  • Unify operational data on a single holistic data source, enabling teams to make better decisions and work more efficiently

Unified GraphQL API - Simplified use by developers and operations teams

  • Establish a single, developer-friendly interface to a unified multi-cloud environment
  • Accurate GraphQL queries provide high-speed and efficient data access
