Abstract:  The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has gradually developed from various technologies and their interconnections. According to IDC's 2017 Internet of Things (IoT) Investment Spending Forecast, the top three industries (regional differences) in the Internet of Things (IoT) that the world is poised to invest in by 2020 are all part of the Industrial Internet market.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has gradually developed from various technologies and their interconnections. According to IDC's 2017 Internet of Things (IoT) Investment Spending Forecast, the top three industries (regional differences) in the Internet of Things (IoT) that the world is poised to invest in by 2020 are all part of the Industrial Internet market. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) can be defined as "machines, computers and people use advanced data analysis results from business transformation to realize intelligent industrial operations".

The number one application area in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is manufacturing. It is also the largest industry for Internet of Things (IoT) spending, including software, hardware, connectivity and services.

In 2016, investments in manufacturing alone accounted for $102.5 billion, while the Internet of Things (IoT) totaled $178 billion as all IoT use cases converge in manufacturing. With overall spending on the Internet of Things (IoT) at $178 billion, manufacturing is by far the largest application industry for IoT, with industrial IoT and manufacturing outpacing all consumer Internet of Things (IoT) applications in all other industries total investment.

According to research published by IDC in early 2017, from a spending perspective, the two other most important use cases in manufacturing, in addition to operations, are production asset management and maintenance and field service.

Transportation is the second largest market for Internet of Things (IoT) spending. Transportation and logistics (T&L) companies are looking to enhance their position across the value chain through advanced communication and monitoring systems provided by the Internet of Things (IoT).
