CTO：Chief Technology Officer
It became fashionable in the United States in the 1980s. Started with large companies that did a lot of research, such as General Electric, AT&T, and ALCOA, with the primary responsibility of turning the results of scientific research into a profit.
In the 1990s, due to the popularity of computer and software companies, many companies gave the title of CTO to the person in charge of managing computer systems and software. Sometimes the CTO and the CIO (Chief Information Officer) are the same person (especially in software companies), and sometimes the CTO belongs to the CIO who is more proficient in science and technology. The nature of CTO jobs varies across companies in different fields; even within the same field, the nature of work can be very different.
Generally, the CTO will have the following responsibilities:
Long-term technical direction (strategic)
Short-term technical direction (tactical)
The impact of management research on company operations and profitability
Software used in the company
What is the difference between CTO and CIO:
A CTO is a technical executive, and a CIO is a company executive with a technical background or some understanding of technology.
Usually the CIO reports to the CEO, or to the CFO. A CIO doesn't need to be a tech savvy, but must be very tech-savvy and able to tap into the potential that technology brings to the company. With the increasing importance of IT in companies, the position of the CIO is also increasing, sometimes reaching the top decision-making level of the company. The CIO is the bridge that connects the company's business model and technology. Basically, a CTO is a master of technology, proficient in the company's core technology, and can lead the team to develop or use new technologies to help the company achieve its goals. Basically the CTO will not be the top executive of the company.
