To install the m2eclipse plugin, you need to meet some prerequisites. You need to be running Eclipse 3.2 or higher, JDK 1.4 or higher, and you need to make sure that Eclipse is running on the JDK and not the JRE. After you have Eclipse and a compatible JDK, you need to install two Eclipse plugins: Subclipse and Mylyn.

14.3.1. Installation Prerequisites
You can install these prerequisite software when installing m2eclipse, just add a remote update site to Eclipse for each prerequisite software. To install these prerequisite software, find Help → Software Updates → Find and Install.... Selecting this menu item loads the Install/Update dialog. Select the "Search for new features to install" option and click Next. You will see a list of "Update sites to visit". Click New Remote Site... and add a new update site for each new prerequisite. Add a new update site for each plugin and make sure the new site is selected. After you click Finish, Eclipse will ask you to select the plug-in component to install. Note that if you are using the latest version of Eclipse, Eclipse 3.4 (Ganymede), the process of installing plugins may be a little different. In Ganymede, you need to select Help → Software Updates..., which will load the "Software Updates and Add-ons" dialog. In this dialog, select the "Available Software" panel and click Add Site..., which will load the "Add Site" dialog. Enter the URL of the update site and click OK.
