Hyperscale data centers drive revenue growth for enterprise storage vendors

  Factory revenue for enterprise storage systems continues to rise as powerful hardware is sold to hyperscale data center players.

  HPE and Dell are linked in enterprise storage provider market share, according to new IDC research. IBM and NetApp were third, while Huawei and Hitachi were tied for fifth.

  According to data released by IDC, the revenue of original design manufacturers (ODMs) in 2017 increased by 34.3% year-on-year to just under $2.8 billion. Server-based storage sales rose 23.8% in the quarter to $4.2 billion in revenue. Meanwhile, external storage systems remained the largest segment with $6.6 billion in sales.

  "Investment in enterprise storage systems is growing at a very healthy rate," said Eric Sheppard, research vice president, IDC's Enterprise Infrastructure Team. "Infrastructure refreshes, a broad market shift to server-based storage, and rapid expansion within public cloud data centers are combining to create strong demand for enterprise storage systems."
