Runaway Commentary: Since the development of blockchain technology, it has attracted the attention of many companies and countries around the world, and of course the most important participant in this blockchain revolution is Russia. So far, Russian President Vladimir Putin has incorporated blockchain technology into his plans for a “digital economy,” saying that Russia will never “be left behind” in the race for blockchain dominance. Putin even met Vitalik Buterin, one of the co-founders of Ethereum. At a recent International Organization for Standardization (ISO) meeting in Tokyo aimed at establishing international standards for blockchain technology, the Russian government sent a large delegation and said that blockchain belongs to Russia.

Blockchain will belong to Russia

Various companies and countries around the world have expressed interest in blockchain technology. And one of the main players in this innovative new technology is Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin has incorporated blockchain technology into his plans for a “digital economy,” saying that Russia will never “be left behind” in the race for blockchain dominance. Putin even met Vitalik Buterin, one of the co-founders of Ethereum.

A New York Times article reported that the Russian government sent a large number of delegates to a meeting of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in Tokyo last year aimed at establishing international standards for blockchain technology. Many participants at the meeting were surprised to learn that the head of the Russian delegation, Grigory Marshalko, worked for the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), the successor to the Soviet State Security Council (KGB). Marshalko also mentioned that two other members of the four-member Russian delegation were also former FSB members.

When other country representatives asked Marshalko why the Russian government is spending so much resources exploring blockchain technology, he replied:

“Look, the internet belongs to Americans — but the blockchain will belong to us.”

The comments made by Marshalko are pretty obvious, not to mention the importance Putin and his government place on this new technology, which means that Russia wants to dominate the blockchain technology space.

A blockchain race

Russia is not the only country sending a high-level delegation to the ISO blockchain conference in Tokyo. The report mentioned that a total of 25 countries sent more than 130 representatives to attend the meeting. China sent representatives from the Ministry of Finance to attend, while the United States decided to send representatives from private companies like IBM and Microsoft. Gilbert Verdian, head of the UK delegation, explained why countries are working hard to guide the future standards of blockchain technology:

"It's a very sought-after technology right now, because it's really laying the groundwork for what's to come."

He added:

"Starting to support the development of this technology now will give people an advantage both politically and economically."

Although international standards still need to be discussed for a long time to reach agreement, there are already undercurrents behind this. Many countries see blockchain as a new battleground for unconventional and competitive advantage. Therefore, countries such as Russia want to adjust the standard slightly to seize the opportunity, while hindering the development of other sovereign countries in this regard.
