Global transportation company Penske Logistics has become the latest member of the Blockchain in Transport Alliance (BiTA).
The agency aims to promote the development of blockchain in the transportation industry by creating applications for supply chain, logistics, asset tracking, transaction ledgers and more. Penske became a corporate member of the agency on January 15.
Companies may focus on creating applications in the food and beverage transportation as well as in the manufacturing sector.
Andy Moses, senior vice president of global product, said the company plans to research blockchain technology while joining the consortium.
"We have joined BiTA to better understand the benefits of blockchain to customers and participate in the formulation of a standard framework for the development and deployment of blockchain technology."
Penske joined the alliance, along with United Parcel Service (UPS). UPS announced last year that it was joining the consortium to help develop standards for the blockchain platform, including how the technology can be used for payments.
At the time, the name of the alliance was Blockchain in Trucking Alliance, and the focus was also on this industry.
However, the involvement of railroad companies and other transport-related agencies has led to a renaming of the alliance.
