.NET Core 3 new features announced: support for Windows desktop applications

At Microsoft's Build 2018 developer conference, the .NET team released a roadmap for the next major version of .NET Core, 3.0. The first preview release of .Net Core 3 is expected later this year, with the official release in 2019.

.NET Core is the open source, cross-platform version of Microsoft's .NET technology, allowing developers to use languages including C#, F# and Visual Basic on Windows, Mac and Linux. It's fair to say that .NET Core is a cross-platform fork of the Windows-only .NET Framework, and Microsoft has been keeping both versions in development since it was first released in June 2016. At the time, Microsoft said that .NET Core is suitable for ASP.NET web applications, as well as Win10 UWP applications. Windows desktop apps will continue to use the .NET Framework.

.NET Core 3.0 will change this situation, and its biggest highlight is support for Windows desktop applications, which means that it will support all major Windows desktop platforms such as Windows Forms, Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and UWP. This will effectively reduce .NET fragmentation and confusion, and reduce the traditional constraints of .NET developers.

In addition, in the official .NET blog , Microsoft also revealed that .NET Core currently has no plans to support desktop applications on Mac or Linux. ASP.NET Core has entered its next stage of development, with the .NET Framework 4.8 expected to be released within 12 months.
