Awesome, my coin! "Bitcoin" entry ranked ninth most visited on Wikipedia in 2017

Wikipedia recently released its 2017 "Annual Top 50 Report," which lists the most popular entries across Wikipedia in 2017.

The entry for 'Bitcoin' was the most popular encyclopedia article under the 'United States' article last year, second only to the Netflix series '13 Reasons Why'. Other popular entries included Donald Trump, Game of Thrones and Queen Elizabeth II.

The Wikipedia entry for Bitcoin says:

Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency and a global payment system. It is the first decentralized digital currency because the system has no central bank or single administrator. The network is peer-to-peer, transactions happen directly between users, There is no intermediary.

The wiki entry for bitcoin ranks just below the 'US' entry and above the Netflix show "13 Reasons Why."

Last year's "bitcoin" entry had more than 15 million cumulative visits, and its traffic peaked on December 8, 2017. JFG, the senior editor of Wikipedia's annual report, used a somewhat eccentric introduction: " Bitcoin is The future of money... Our readers have no idea what it is: Bitcoin is as stable as gold, bubbles are bigger than tulips, and it's all on their nerves.

She also wrote,

“Gold has made a lot of adventurers rich, and Bitcoin is used for extortion. You can do whatever you want in the gold mine, but in the event of a war you will have nothing. However, you can still buy gold so that your children and grandchildren can cash out at any time, and Bitcoin Coin, dubbed "the future of money," has turned into the largest speculative asset ever, a payment that is totally unsuitable from the status quo. "

Top ten terms

Other cryptocurrency-related articles still seem to lag far behind Bitcoin in popularity on Wikipedia. No other cryptocurrency-related article made it into the top 50 most viewed list.

But even last week's 5,000 most popular articles only had 4 entries from the cryptocurrency space, with Bitcoin at 354th, Blockchain at 312th, Cryptocurrency at 1273rd, Ethereum at No. 354 Ranked 3710th. The term "blockchain" is now getting more search queries than "bitcoin", which also shows that people are delving into the world of cryptocurrencies and trying to understand the technology behind it.
