JAXenter's 2018 Tech Trends Survey: Python as a Rising Star

Here's data from more than 1,000 participants from 85 countries: the results of the latest JAXenter survey, which aims to identify technology topics that are particularly important in 2018. The survey contains 10 topics and answers to help us accurately map this year's technology trends. Let's take a look at the top programming languages first.

Technology Trends for 2018

The survey is divided into ten parts:

  • Programming language

  • web framework

  • UI technology

  • Software Architecture

  • data storage

  • data processing

  • Continuous Delivery and Automation

  • Cloud Platform and Technology

  • DevOps, containers and service discovery

  • other technologies

Top programming languages of 2018

First look at how interesting or very interesting developers are about these languages in 2018.

Java 9 was also the developer's sweetheart last year, followed by Java 6/7/8.

Since JAXenter launched a poll last month, they asked readers what version of Java they are currently using, and according to the results, the majority of respondents are still using Java 8 (82% to be more precise). Eighty percent use Java 9, and seven percent use Java 7.

Even more interesting: third and fourth are  JavaScript/ECMAScript and TypeScript respectively  - a clear statement that JavaScript has taken hold in the world of programming languages. Unlike last year, Scala came in fifth place, while Kotlin came in sixth.

Go is different, in 2017 it was in seventh place and now barely makes the top 10. But  the latest report from RedMonk shows that Kotlin is on the rise, Go is steadily climbing, and Scala may be at the beginning of a setback.

Python  has also gained more fans, helping it go from ninth (2017) to eighth, which is not surprising. This month's TIOBE Index shows that Python continues to rise month-over-month due to increased interest in machine learning. This means that Python has clearly surpassed many other scripting languages, including Ruby, Perl and PHP.
