Microsoft has announced that developers can now access its C++ libraries on two new platforms. Vcpkg is now available for Linux and MacOS, joining existing support for Windows and UWP.

Vcpkg is an open source VC++ packaging tool. The project was first announced at CppCon in 2016 to meet the needs of developers. "Getting native libraries on Windows is a critical part of the application development process. In one survey, we found that 80% of developers' C++ projects depended on two or more libraries. Nonetheless, in contrast to other platforms Compared to (Linux, MacOS, etc.), the process of getting native libraries is currently lower than C++ developers expected."

The tool now has over 900 libraries and functions, of which over 350 are available for Linux and Mac. Microsoft expects that number to grow rapidly.

Vcpkg is built on a number of principles, including: open source, zero installation, reproducible builds, customizable builds, and more.
