Deloitte's latest research uses metadata on the Github platform to conduct an empirical analysis of nearly 90,000 blockchain projects, track the evolution of blockchain technology since 2009, and help investors explore the essence through bubbles. The study also noted that Beijing and Shanghai are very active in blockchain activity. Due to the active Bitcoin projects, Beijing and Shanghai have ranked among the top 5 cities in the world for the distribution of open source blockchain talents.

When analyzing the blockchain library and its contents, we noticed that more and more institutions are joining it. In 2010, institutions developed less than one percent of projects.

By 2017, they had 11% of their blockchain projects (organizations currently account for 7% of the total number of software development projects on GitHub). Recent data on the success rate of commercial organizations gaining blockchain initiatives through open source looks promising; some high-profile large commercial entities are already doing so.

Of particular importance, some organizations have developed projects that have spawned new platforms, such as Ethereum, Corda, and Quorum. Some developers use to build applications. Organization-owned projects tend to be updated more frequently than user-developed projects and five times more likely to be replicated.

When an item is copied, all content is available to the account of the copied item, thus becoming a de facto knowledge transfer mechanism. This process is often referred to as a reference network, in which the most frequently replicated projects take a more dominant position in the project network, which we call project centering.

Some of the most core projects are developed and maintained by the organization: Bitcoin Core, Ethereum's C++ and Go implementations, Ethereum's Python client, and Bitcoin Improvement Proposals.

When studying the above chart, keep in mind that the initial projects of Ethereum and Bitcoin were maintained by organizations (foundations), and a large number of blockchain projects and applications in GitHub are actually built on these two projects.

In short, an organization-led project is the backbone code for thousands of other projects. Of the 20 most important projects in blockchain, 18 are created and maintained by organizations.
