A brief introduction to Planet Explorer - high resolution image download and use

planet explorer

During the period, new products were released, similar to Google earth's online map query tool, planet explorer. One of the main purposes here is to obtain a 3.7m high-resolution image for free online without writing code.

At present, this limited area is all near the equator. This interface allows you to upload vector, distance measurement and area measurement about the research area. The satellite used here is the skysat satellite

Planet Explorer is an online tool for searching and analyzing geospatial imagery that allows you to understand how the Earth has changed over time. You can use Planet Explorer to search image catalogs and download full-resolution data or analyze hosted data in your browser.

Specific workflow:

Planet Explorer includes images from the Planet catalogs (PlanetScope, SkySat and RapidEye) as well as public images from Sentinel-2 and Landsat 8. Planet's imagery is available in multiple cadences (from daily scenes to weekly, monthly, and quarterly basemaps), and at various resolutions (for example, SkySat is high resolution, PlanetScope is medium resolution).

Functional Overview

  1. Search imagery : You can search for everyday scenes and basemaps by entering a location, uploading a geographic file, drawing an area of interest on the map, or clicking the timeline.

  2. View Catalog : You can view and filter everyday scenes in the catalog, as well as view basemaps.

  3. Analyze data : You can analyze data by taking measurements on a map, comparing images side-by-side, enhancing pixels, or applying spectral visualization.

  4. Order hosted data : You can order everyday scenarios for analysis in the browser (i.e. enhanced pixel, spectral visualization).

  5. Download Daily Scenes : You can download daily scenes by ordering directly from the app or via a cURL request for a specific scene ID (if you prefer the API). You must purchase a plan to do so.

  6. Task high-resolution images : You can task high-resolution images in the Tasks Dashboard linked from the Explorer. High-resolution images are taken on request and require a paid plan.
