Professor Xin Wang of the University of California, Santa Cruz is now recruiting several 2022 summer remote research interns!

Mentor Profile: Xin Wang is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz, leading the establishment of the UCSC Embodiment, Reasoning, Intelligence, and language Communication (ERIC) Lab. His research interests mainly include natural language processing, computer vision and machine learning, especially in the fields of Embodied AI and multimodality. He has interned at Google Research Institute, Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research Institute, Microsoft Research Institute, Adobe Research Institute, etc. He has served as the field chair of top natural language processing conferences such as ACL, NAACL, and EMNLP, and the senior program committee of top artificial intelligence conferences such as AAAI and IJCAI. He has organized many workshops and tutorials at top conferences such as ACL, CVPR, ICCV, etc., covering vision and language, self-supervised learning of natural language processing, etc., and has won the CVPR Best Student Paper Award, the Amazon Alexa Prize, and the Google Teaching Staff. research awards, etc.
Take the admission information published by Professor Qian Chen of UCSC: our school, UCSC, is the second closest research university to Silicon Valley (the closest is Stanford). The school's world ranking is around 50, the United States is around 30 (usnews), and the undergraduate ranking is 70-80 in the United States (our undergraduate teaching is not strong in research). CS ranks in the 40s to 50s (csranking and usnews). However, the actual scientific research strength and reputation are higher than this number. We have 7 acm fellows (40 faculty in the whole department). PhD graduates from our department can be professors at Berkeley, UCSD, MIT, Johns Hopkins. In recent years, many new professors have given up the top 30 offers to join our department, because they are interested in the geographical advantages and overall strength of our department.
Santa Cruz's location is excellent, and its proximity to Silicon Valley means that networking/internship/start-up opportunities with industry are within easy reach. Students in our Lab have successfully found summer internships in industrial research labs such as Google Research, Microsoft Research, Facebook Research, Adobe Research, Samsung Research and more. Santa Cruz itself is also a very livable city for hiking, surfing, diving, kayaking, and golfing.
