Google awards 25 Rust contributors

"Google Open Source Peer Bonus" is an open source reward program implemented by Google to reward external open source contributors nominated by Google employees for their special contributions to open source.

Recently, Google announced the latest round of Rust winners, this time a total of 25 winners, to thank them for their contributions to the Rust project and ecosystem.

As a founding member of the Rust Foundation, Google uses Rust in several internal projects, including Android, Fuchsia, and ICU4X, and has been involved in projects that bring Rust to the Linux kernel.

Google said in its official blog:

Open source is at the heart of many of our products. While we contribute directly upstream whenever possible, the Open Source Peer Bonus program is designed to reward outstanding contributions to free software by outside open source contributors, whether or not that contribution benefits Google.

The Open Source Peer Bonus program rewards open source enthusiasts for contributions in the open source space, including code contributions, community work, documentation, mentoring, and other types of open source contributions, if a Googler believes someone has made an active contribution to an open source project Contribution, you can nominate this person for the Open Source Peer Bonus, but the nomination is subject to the following rules :

  • Can nominate outstanding FOSS contributors outside of Google
  • Nominees must be over 18 years old
  • Cannot nominate Googlers, interns or TVCs
  • Cannot nominate U.S. federal government or public university employees
  • A person cannot receive more than two awards per year
  • Up to three nominations per Googler per round
  • After the review, winners will receive a prepaid debit card and an award letter
