OpenBCI | Open Source Brain-Computer Interface (1) Preface

A non-professional brain-computer interface Xiaobai

Reasons for digging

I first came into contact with the brain-computer interface and OpenBCI because I joined Daiso and wanted to do my own fish fishing project. Although the brain-computer interface sounds very metaphysical and has nothing to do with my major, it was later out of fun and interest. I studied off and on for a while, barely reaching the entry level.

OpenBCI : As the
saying goes, " Workers must first sharpen their tools if they want to be good at their jobs ." To do EEG development, at least a set of equipment is required. I chose the OpenBCI platform for two reasons:

  • Affordable ! The price of scientific research-grade EEG acquisition equipment used in laboratories or research institutions is tens of thousands (the humble college students shed tears of poverty. But for us to do small projects or simply out of interest, the accuracy of OpenBCI can fully meet the requirements.
  • Large space for secondary development ! OpenBCI official website provides very detailed technical documents and various development interfaces, which is a boon for developers. Although some other platforms have very complete and cool functions, they are all encapsulated in the product and cannot be modified or added to their own design.

The reason why I want to write a column to introduce OpenBCI is because when I first started playing, there were basically no relevant Chinese documents or videos. I did a little research on the usage method from the English documents on the official website, and encountered many difficulties during the period. So I want to take advantage of the gap between courses and exams to write a few blogs to introduce basic usage methods, and also record my own development and pit experience, hoping to help other BCIers.

Pit filling plan

The main plan in the future is to introduce the following parts:

  1. Hardware articles: hardware product model, purchase and assembly, etc.
  2. Software articles: startup environment construction, GUI, SDK usage, etc.
  3. Project articles: official website community project, if I have time, I will share the winning project plan of my competition

Finally, I want to say that the content of this column is mainly for people who have never been in contact with OpenBCI or who are new to OpenBCI. I am not a brain-computer interface professional myself. I use OpenBCI for DIY rather than scientific research purposes. Therefore, the level of blog content is limited and unavoidable. If there is an error, you are welcome to criticize and correct.
